## Notes

- 12 oz standard can: body Ø66.0 mm (211), 122.5 mm tall, 0.10 mm aluminium wall, 202 end with a Ø57.4 mm seam (the double-seam chime); dome in the base about 10 mm deep. Tall 16 oz is the same Ø66 at 157 mm.
- Sleek (204 body) cans are Ø58.0; slim (202 body) cans Ø53.3. The pull-tab end is 0.25 mm thick and the hardest part; the body cuts with scissors.
- Stirling use: the 12 oz can is the classic displacer cylinder (Ø66). Cut the top off below the chime, leaving 110 mm; the printed cap in the can-engine kit fits over the Ø66 body with a 0.3 mm clearance and carries the displacer guide. The base dome is the hot end: a tea light fits under it.
- Two cans: cut the base off a second can and slide it over the first (Ø66 over Ø66 doesn't fit; the body is pre-stretched, so use a slim can inside a standard one as a regenerator sleeve).

## Questions

**What is the diameter of a 12 oz soda can?**

66.0 mm body (2.6 in), 122.5 mm tall; the top seam is Ø57.4 mm. A 16 oz tall can has the same 66 mm diameter at 157 mm.

**How thick is a soda can wall?**

About 0.10 mm in the body (0.097 mm typical), 0.25 mm at the end; aluminium alloy 3004 body, 5182 end.

**Can I make a Stirling engine from a soda can?**

Yes, it is the standard beginner build: the can is the displacer cylinder, a balloon the diaphragm, a CD the flywheel. The can-engine kit here has the printed cap, clamp ring, guide and crank stand sized for a 12 oz can.
