# Chipboard screws, DIN 7505 (3, 3.5, 4, 4.5, 5, 6 mm): pan, countersunk and oval-countersunk head dimensions, cross recess size + type-B envelope models

> What are the head diameter, head height and cross recess size of a 4 mm or 5 mm chipboard (particle board) screw?

- Category: Hardware › Fasteners
- Kind: Standard part
- Basis: fasten.it's DIN 7505 table (types A, B and C, the 1986 edition, now with no current standard of its own), Flints' catalogue for the Spax drive sizes; six type-B envelope models as files

## Notes

- Millimetres. DIN 7505 covers screws for particle board with cross recess form Z in three head forms: A pan, B flat countersunk, C oval countersunk; nominal diameters 3, 3.5, 4, 4.5, 5 and 6 mm. fasten.it states there are no more technical norms for these screws and that sizes can vary between makers. The page prints no lengths. Columns follow the page: nominal diameter, P (pitch, ±10 %), dk (head diameter, min–max), k (head height, max for A and B, ≈ for C), a (max), r (min for A, min–max for B, max for C), d1 and d2 (min–max, not defined on the page), recess number, m (≈, not defined) and t (min–max, not defined).
- Recess number agrees with the Spax pairing in Flints' catalogue: 3 mm PZ1; 3.5, 4, 4.5 and 5 mm PZ2; 6 mm PZ3 (Flints prints only the drive size, no head dimensions). Klimas' Ø5 mm KMH chipboard screw sheet (PZ2) was found but not tabulated.
- Pilot holes are not on this page: no published table for metric chipboard screws could be verified (Spax' own sheets give only 'without pre-drilling, depending on the wood'). Flints' catalogue has a pilot-hole table for imperial gauge numbers, which is on wood-screws-flat-head-inch as a separate set of sources, not converted here.
- Files are Xem-drawn envelopes of the type B head, not the real screw: a cone from dk max at the top down to the nominal diameter over k max, then a plain shank at the nominal diameter (the real thread major diameter is d1 and the thread is smaller at the root); no cross recess, no thread, no point. The overall length 40 mm is an example chosen by Xem for all six files, not a published length.
- Not on this page: SPAX trade-name geometry (4CUT tip, T-STAR plus drive), Torx-drive chipboard screws, and screw lengths. Countersunk metric machine screws: countersunk-screws-metric.

## Questions

**What is the head diameter of a 4 mm chipboard screw?**

Type B countersunk: 7.5 to 8 mm (dk), 2.5 mm high (k max); type A pan head 7.42 to 8 mm, 2.92 mm high. Recess number 2 (PZ2).

**What Pozidriv size for a 6 mm chipboard screw?**

Recess number 3 (PZ3) in DIN 7505 as listed on fasten.it; Flints lists Spax 6 mm screws with PZ3.

**What countersink diameter for a 5 mm chipboard screw?**

The type B head is 9.5 to 10 mm across (dk) and 3 mm high (k max); the oval head type C is 9.64 to 10 mm across.
