## Notes

- Jaw couplings (spider couplings, L-series, 'lovejoy' style) join two shafts with two metal hubs with interlocking jaws and an elastomer spider between them: they absorb small misalignment and damp vibration but are not torsionally stiff. The L number names the size (L050, L070, L090 and L100 are the common ones for steppers, servos and small motors); hubs come pilot-bored or finished to a bore up to the maximum listed.
- Numbers: BEP's metric table (pilot bore, maximum bore, overall Ø, assembled length, hub width, hub Ø, set screw), compared with McMaster-Carr's jaw coupling listing (overall Ø × length) and a Qtec inch table. Where McMaster differs the McMaster value is shown in brackets: the overall Ø agrees within 1 mm (L050 27.5 / 27, L075 44.5 / 45, L110 84 / 85), the length agrees for 9 of the 11 sizes and differs for L035 (20 against 21), L190 (133 against 124, Qtec inch 4-7/8) and L225 (153 against 137).
- Where the lengths disagree the sources are for different hub/spider assemblies (hub widths and spider thickness vary between makers): use the maker's drawing for a length-critical design. McMaster also lists an L099 (65 × 73) which the BEP table does not have.
- Files: none. The hub profile (jaw teeth, spider lobes, clamp or set-screw boss) is not in the tables.
- Left out: keyways, spider hardness grades, torque ratings, taper-lock and clamp-style hubs, inch metric bore lists.

## Questions

**What are the dimensions of an L070 jaw coupling?**

Overall Ø35, assembled length 51, hub width 19, bore 9 (pilot) to 19 (max), M6 set screw.

**What are the dimensions of an L090?**

Overall Ø54, length 54, hub width 21, bore 9 to 24, M6 set screw.

**What is the largest bore of an L100?**

35 mm (pilot 12), overall Ø65, length 89.

**What is the difference between a jaw coupling and a helical coupler?**

A jaw coupling has a rubber spider between two hubs (damping, but backlash-free only when preloaded); a helical coupler is a single piece cut into a spiral. The helical sizes are on the shaft-couplers page.
