## Notes

- A lug nut or wheel bolt is defined by four things: thread, seat, hex and length. The thread has to match the stud or hub, the seat has to match the wheel, the hex has to match your socket; length depends on wheel thickness and thread engagement. The nut or bolt must also match the pattern on the wheel (see wheel-bolt-patterns-pcd-lug-patterns).
- Where the sources disagree: the inch 9/16 thread is 9/16-18 in McGard's catalogue, motorverso and trailer hub listings, and 9/16-20 in Wikipedia. Wikipedia also calls 13/16 in a less common hex, while motorverso and McGard treat it as the standard inch match to 21 mm. 13/16 in is 20.64 mm, so a 21 mm socket fits but is not the same size; 3/4 in is 19.05 mm against 19 mm.
- Thread major diameters are the nominal designation (M12 = 12.0 mm; 1/2 in = 12.7 mm); pitches are the second number. No tolerance classes or thread forms were read, and wheel-seat angle tolerances are not published in the sources; use the wheel maker's data.
- Lug nut lengths are product-specific: Dorman 611-183 (M12-1.50, 19 mm hex) is 0.831 in (21.1 mm) overall and McGard 69432 (M14x1.5, 13/16 hex) is 1.945 in (49.4 mm); the cone, bulge and hub-cap profiles are not given as numbers, so no nut or bolt models are published.
- Torque: the sources read do not give general values (Wikipedia: vehicle and wheel maker values apply; wheel-sizes.com prints per-vehicle torque on some pages, 131 Nm for the Toyota Tundra and 133 Nm for the Nissan Titan, which are not repeated as rules). Use the vehicle's manual.
- Files: none; this page is numbers only. McGard's catalogue is the maker's listing used for the thread and hex sizes; the maker's own CAD was not found.

## Questions

**What size are most lug nuts?**

M12x1.5 (Honda, Toyota, many cars) and M14x1.5 (trucks, SUVs, Audi); these are the most common pitches in Wikipedia's list.

**What does 'R13' on a ball-seat lug bolt mean?**

13 mm ball radius. R12, R13, R14 and R15 are different radii and must match the wheel's seat.

**Is a 21 mm lug nut socket the same as 13/16 in?**

No: 21 mm is the metric size; 13/16 in is 20.64 mm. A 21 mm socket fits a 13/16 in nut, but they are not equal.

**What seat angle do conical lug nuts use?**

60° normally; 45° on some racing wheels (Wikipedia). Dorman prints 'Conical Seat - 60 deg' for the M12-1.50, 19 mm part 611-183.

**What thread are the studs on a 5 on 4.5 trailer hub?**

1/2-20 (Dexter 5 on 4.5 and 5 on 4.75 kits); 8 on 6.5 hubs have 9/16 studs. See trailer-hub-bolt-patterns.
