Morse tapers MT0–MT7 and 4-1/2: gauge diameter, small end, taper per foot, plug depth, shank length, tang length + taper plug and ring gauges — dimension sheet Source: Xem Studio, https://xemstudio.com/objects/morse-tapers-mt0-mt7/ (sheet CC BY 4.0) Basis: Machinery's Handbook table 1b (A, D, R, taper per foot) cross-checked with threadcheck (A, D, plug length), cgtk.co.uk (mm), tools-n-gizmos (shank and tang length) and Engineers Edge; plug and ring gauges are Xem-drawn from the A, D and plug depth, tapered portion only Catalog version: 2026-10-20 Overall (mm): length 254.0, width 124.6, height 124.6 - A Morse taper (MT, 'Morse Kegel' MK in German) is a self-holding taper of about 5/8 in per foot (≈ 1:20, a little different per size) on drill shanks, lathe tailstock and headstock spindles, mill arbors and drill-press spindles. The table is in the inch units the taper is defined in, with mm computed (× 25.4, to 0.001 mm). A is the diameter at the gauge line (large end of the plug / mouth of the socket), D the small-end diameter, 'plug depth' the taper length from A to D (threadcheck's plug gauge lengths and cgtk's L2 agree), 'shank length' B the overall length including the tang, and T the tang length. R is the tang radius. - Check: for every size the published taper per foot equals (A − D) ÷ plug depth × 12 to within 0.002 in per foot (the Handbook's tolerance on rate of taper is 0.002 in per foot, all sizes). Agreement: A and D agree between Machinery's Handbook, threadcheck, cgtk (D1, D2) and AIMS for MT0 to MT7 and 4-1/2 (AIMS rounds the third decimal: MT3 small end 19.762 against 19.761 computed). Plug depth from threadcheck / cgtk agrees with tools-n-gizmos' socket depth for each size. Shank length B in tools-n-gizmos agrees with cgtk's L1 for MT0 to MT6 and with Engineers Edge for MT1 to MT3; cgtk's L1 for MT7 (141.275 mm) disagrees with tools-n-gizmos' 11-5/8 in, so MT7 B is left blank here, and MT4-1/2 has no published B or T in the sources read. - Disagreement kept: AIMS Industrial's 'length' column prints 50.8, 53.5, 64.3, 81.0, 102.0, 114.3, 132.0, 184.0 and 254.0 mm, which is not the plug depth of the inch tables for MT1, MT2, MT4, MT5 and MT6 (the plug depths 53.975, 65.087, 103.188, 131.762 and 184.150 mm); the AIMS column is shown for comparison only and is not used. Tang radius R (Machinery's Handbook, 'R'): 0.1562, 0.2031, 0.2500, 0.3125, 0.4687, 0.6250, 0.7500, 1.1250 in for MT0 to MT7; it equals cgtk's 'H' in mm, so cgtk's 'H' and 'R' labels are not the same as the Handbook's. - Models: for MT0 to MT7 there are two files each. The plug gauge is a frustum with the published A, D and plug depth (the tapered portion only; tang, collar and keyway are not drawn because the tang thickness, flat length and undercut diameter columns could not be assigned to sizes reliably). The ring gauge is a square block with a through taper bore of the same A → D over the plug depth: a stand-in for the standard's socket, which is deeper. Block width (1.5 × A, rounded) is an Xem choice. Both are exact nominal; allow your process's tolerance on the taper (the standard's tolerance on the taper is small, so ream or grind to gauge). - Not here: Brown & Sharpe, Jacobs and Jarno tapers, metric tapers 80 / 100 / 120 / 160 / 200, tang thickness and keyway dimensions, ISO 296 tolerance classes (the free ISO 296:1974 sample is not legible), and R8, which has no published dimension table in the sources found. taper taper per foot (in) A gauge line (in) A (mm) D small end (in) D (mm) plug depth P (in) P (mm) AIMS 'length' (mm) shank length B (in = mm) tang length T (in = mm) tang radius R (in = mm) MT0 0.62460 0.3561 9.045 0.2520 6.401 2 50.800 50.8 2-11/32 = 59.531 1/4 = 6.350 0.1562 = 3.967 MT1 0.59858 0.4750 12.065 0.3690 9.373 2-1/8 53.975 53.5 2-9/16 = 65.087 3/8 = 9.525 0.2031 = 5.159 MT2 0.59941 0.7000 17.780 0.5720 14.529 2-9/16 65.087 64.3 3-1/8 = 79.375 7/16 = 11.112 0.2500 = 6.350 MT3 0.60235 0.9380 23.825 0.7780 19.761 3-3/16 80.962 81 3-7/8 = 98.425 9/16 = 14.287 0.3125 = 7.938 MT4 0.62326 1.2310 31.267 1.0200 25.908 4-1/16 103.188 102 4-7/8 = 123.825 5/8 = 15.875 0.4687 = 11.905 MT4-1/2 0.62400 1.5000 38.100 1.2660 32.156 4-1/2 114.300 114.3 — — — MT5 0.63151 1.7480 44.399 1.4750 37.465 5-3/16 131.762 132 6-1/8 = 155.575 3/4 = 19.050 0.6250 = 15.875 MT6 0.62565 2.4940 63.348 2.1160 53.746 7-1/4 184.150 184 8-9/16 = 217.487 1-1/8 = 28.575 0.7500 = 19.050 MT7 0.62400 3.2700 83.058 2.7500 69.850 10 254.000 254 — 1-3/8 = 34.925 1.1250 = 28.575 Files elsewhere (not hosted by Xem Studio; license as stated by the publisher): - Machinery's Handbook (31st ed., table 1b): Morse standard taper shanks: A, D, R, taper per foot and per inch, sizes 0 to 7 — web — Publisher's page; dimensions are facts — https://online.flippingbook.com/view/954192180/1130 - threadcheck: Morse taper plug gauges: taper per foot, large end D, small end d, length, sizes 0 to 7 and 4-1/2 — web — Publisher's page; dimensions are facts — https://www.threadcheck.com/morse-cylindrical-taper-plug-with-tang - cgtk.co.uk (A.
