# PVC Schedule 40 and Schedule 80 pipe: OD, minimum wall and ID, 1/2 to 4 in

> What are the OD, wall thickness and ID of Schedule 40 and Schedule 80 PVC pipe?

- Category: Tri-clamp & pipe › Pipe, tube & threads
- Kind: Standard part
- Basis: Westlake Pipe Sch 40 / Sch 80 table, JM Eagle spec sheet and McMaster-Carr Sch 80 pipe page agree; numbers only (Sch 40 pipe CAD on 'schedule-40-pipe')

## Notes

- Schedule 40 and Schedule 80 PVC share the outside diameter (the steel NPS OD); only the wall differs, so both fit the same sockets and fittings. Sch 80 is thicker inward: 1/2 in has a 0.109 in wall in Sch 40 and 0.147 in in Sch 80.
- Sources: OD, minimum wall and ID from Westlake Pipe's Sch 40 / Sch 80 table; OD and minimum wall repeated by JM Eagle's spec sheet (Rev 12) for all nine sizes (equal); Sch 80 minimum wall and ID repeated by McMaster-Carr's Schedule 80 pipe page. In every row Westlake's ID equals OD minus twice the minimum wall (to 0.0015 in). The Sch 40 sizes 1/2 to 2 in match the existing 'schedule-40-pipe' page (OD 21.34 to 60.33 mm, walls 2.77 to 3.91 mm).
- Minimum wall, not nominal: real pipe is thicker and OD has a tolerance. The ID is a calculated value, not a control dimension.
- STEP/STL for Sch 40 pipe stubs (1/2 to 2 in) are on 'schedule-40-pipe'; no pipe files are repeated here. Left out: Sch 40 / 80 OD tolerances and sizes under 1/2 in and over 4 in (in the same tables, not asked), Schedule 120, and pressure ratings (differ by maker and temperature).

## Questions

**What is the OD of 1 in Schedule 80 PVC pipe?**

1.315 in (33.40 mm), the same as Schedule 40; Sch 80 has a 0.179 in (4.55 mm) minimum wall and a 0.957 in (24.31 mm) ID.

**What is the difference between Sch 40 and Sch 80 PVC?**

Wall thickness only: the OD is identical, so the same socket fittings fit. 1/2 in is 0.109 in thick in Sch 40 and 0.147 in in Sch 80.

**What is the ID of 2 in Schedule 40 PVC?**

2.067 in (52.50 mm) with a 0.154 in minimum wall; Schedule 80 is 1.939 in (49.25 mm).
