## Notes

- PVC pipe is NOT a straight press fit. A Schedule 40 socket is a taper: it is widest at the entrance (A) and narrowest at the bottom (B), and the pipe OD sits between them (1/2 in: pipe OD 0.840, socket 0.848 at the mouth and 0.836 at the bottom). Solvent cement fills the gap; a dry pipe goes in part-way and stops. A part that goes INTO a socket (a printed adapter spigot) is sized to the pipe OD, from the page 'pvc-schedule-40-80-pipe-od-and-wall'; the table here is for a part that is a socket.
- Same table, three readings: ASTM D2466-23 (iTeh sample pages) Table 1 for 1/2 to 4 in (1/8 to 12 in there), ASTM D2466-17 (identical for every size and column), Wavin's data sheet (A and B for all 10 sizes) and Charlotte Pipe's submittal (A, B and C for 9 sizes, no 3-1/2). All agree to the thousandth of an inch.
- C is the MINIMUM socket length. A maker's real socket can be longer (Charlotte's 1/2 in 90° elbow has a 3/4 in deep socket, Spears' 3/4 in has 15/16 in): see the laying-length page. D is the minimum inside diameter of the waterway and M the minimum hub outside diameter; makers mold the hub larger (Spears prints M = 1-1/8 in for a 1/2 in elbow vs 0.998 here).
- Charlotte's submittal also gives the Schedule 80 socket length C: 1/2 in 0.875, 3/4 in 1.000, 1 in 1.125, 1-1/4 in 1.250, 1-1/2 in 1.375, 2 in 1.500, 2-1/2 in 1.750, 3 in 1.875, 4 in 2.250 (the submittal prints one A and B for both schedules). No Schedule 80 fitting standard table was read, so no Sch 80 hub or bore is listed.
- McMaster-Carr's Schedule 40 PVC fitting page (linked) lists socket-connect elbows, tees and couplings in 1/2, 3/4, 1, 1-1/2 and 2 in (3 and 4 in for some); it does not print socket dimensions. Left out: sizes under 1/2 in and over 4 in (in D2466-23 but not asked), the wall-thickness and out-of-round columns of Table 1 whose column assignment was scrambled in extraction.

## Questions

**What is the inside diameter of a 1/2 in Schedule 40 PVC socket?**

0.848 in (21.54 mm) at the entrance, tapering to 0.836 in (21.23 mm) at the bottom, ±0.004 in. The pipe OD is 0.840 in.

**How deep is a Schedule 40 PVC socket?**

At least 0.688 in (1/2 in), 0.719 in (3/4), 0.875 in (1), 1.094 in (1-1/2), 1.156 in (2), 2.000 in (4); makers' real sockets can be longer.

**Why is a PVC socket tapered?**

The taper gives a dry interference fit that stops the pipe part-way and leaves a thin cement gap; the pipe OD lies between the entrance and bottom diameters.
