# SharkBite-type push-to-connect fittings: tube insertion depth by size, 1/4 to 2 in (copper, PEX, CPVC)

> How far must tube go into a SharkBite push-to-connect fitting (insertion depth for 1/2, 3/4, 1 inch)?

- Category: Tri-clamp & pipe › Pipe, tube & threads
- Kind: Standard part
- Basis: SharkBite's installation guide (insertion depth in inches and mm), with the values printed in SharkBite's SBDC35 catalogue, an Aqua Dynamic manual and a third-party how-to shown beside it where they differ; numbers only

## Notes

- Insertion depth is how far the cut, deburred tube must be pushed into the fitting to seat; the guide says mark the tube at that depth and check the mark meets the fitting face. Rows are SharkBite's installation guide in full (fitting size = nominal CTS size, pipe OD = nominal + 1/8 in, depth in inches and the mm printed beside it). The guide lists these pipe types as approved: PEX (ASTM F876, CSA B137.5), copper (ASTM B88), CPVC (ASTM D2846, CSA B137.6), PE-RT (ASTM F2769) and HDPE (SDR-9, ASTM D2737).
- The sources disagree, so the other values are shown beside the guide's, not averaged. For 1/2 in: guide 0.95 in, Aqua Dynamic manual and the third-party article 1 in. For 3/4 in: guide 1.10 in, both others 1-1/8 in (1.125 in). For 1 in: guide 1.31 in, Aqua Dynamic 1-1/4 in, the third-party article 1-1/2 in. For 1-1/4, 1-1/2 and 2 in the SharkBite SBDC35 catalogue prints 2, 2-1/4 and 2-1/2 in against the guide's 1.88, 2.05 and 2.19 in; the catalogue text read gives these under the installation and slip-feature wording and does not say whether they are insertion depths for the same product, so check the guide for your fitting. Use the depth printed on or with the fitting you are installing; a 1/8 in difference between sources is within what a marked tube shows.
- The Aqua Dynamic manual is for a different maker's push-fit fitting, shown because it prints a comparable table; the other makers' depths are not SharkBite's.
- Not published as numbers in anything read: fitting body diameter and length, the stainless grab ring and O-ring geometry, tube stiffener dimensions. No file is drawn (nothing defines a body). McMaster-Carr sells SharkBite-compatible push-to-connect fittings with per-part STEP; its category pages and SharkBite tool page are linked, not copied. Pipe sizes and walls: copper-pipe-type-l-m. Soldered joints: copper-solder-fittings-b16-22-sizes. Push-to-connect pneumatic tube fittings are another family: push-to-connect-fitting-sizes.

## Questions

**How far does 1/2 inch pipe go into a SharkBite fitting?**

0.95 in (24 mm) in SharkBite's installation guide; an Aqua Dynamic manual and a how-to article print 1 in. Mark the tube and push to the mark.

**How deep is the insertion for a 3/4 inch SharkBite?**

1.10 in (28 mm) in SharkBite's installation guide; other sources print 1-1/8 in.

**What pipe can I use in a SharkBite fitting?**

PEX, copper, CPVC, PE-RT and HDPE (SDR-9) per SharkBite's installation guide, to the ASTM standards named on the page.
