# Short-link chain DIN 766 and DIN 5685: wire diameter, pitch, inside and outside width

> What are the dimensions of DIN 766 and DIN 5685 short-link chain: wire diameter, pitch, inside width, outside width?

- Category: Hardware › Rigging
- Kind: Standard part
- Basis: fasteners.eu and SCIC Chain for DIN 766 (they disagree on b1 above 10 mm and are shown side by side); RS Components, Kramp and Load-Tech for DIN 5685; numbers only, load ratings left out

## Notes

- DIN 766 is the short-link round steel chain (calibrated, for chain wheels); the columns are the standard's letters as the sources head them: d wire diameter, t pitch (inside length), b1 minimum inside width, b2 maximum outside width, length of 11 pitches, mass per metre. The fasteners.eu table lists d 4 to 42 mm; the SCIC Chain table lists 10 to 42 mm (it names its rows d × t, so 10 × 28 is d 10, t 28).
- The two DIN 766 tables agree on pitch t and outside width b2 for every size they share (10, 13, 16, 18, 20, 23, 26, 30, 36, 42) but not on the minimum inside width b1: fasteners.eu prints b1 = 1.2 × d (for example 12 for d 10, 15.6 for d 13, 24 for d 20, 50 for d 42) while SCIC prints b1 = 1.4 × d at most sizes (14 for d 10, 18 for d 13, 28 for d 20, 54.5 for d 42). Both are shown; which belongs to your edition of the standard is not decided here. Check b1 against the standard you work to before sizing a mating part.
- DIN 5685 is the short, medium and long link chain family (not calibrated). The RS Components datasheet gives, for each chain size, the link style, the inside link length with its tolerance and the minimum inside link width; its table covers 2.5 to 7 mm and carries the note that the 6.5 mm row is not a preferred size covered by DIN 5685:1991 (the note's placement in the extracted text is ambiguous; it is repeated here for the 6.5 mm row only). One Kramp listing (Ø5 mm × 21 mm, sold as DIN 5685 short link) shows inner length 21 mm, which agrees with RS, inner width 10 mm and outer sizes 31 × 20 mm; that listing is a sold chain's actual size, not a limit, and the RS minimum inside width for Ø5 is 9.0 mm. Load-Tech's DIN 5685A table (gauge, step, width B) is shown as printed with its own caution that actual dimensions may differ; it is not cross-checked against RS (its step values equal RS inside lengths for 3, 4, 5 and 6 mm, which is what 'step' appears to mean there).
- Chain for lifting is not covered here: DIN 766 and DIN 5685 are general-purpose chain, and the page leaves out breaking and working loads on purpose. Alloy lifting chain (Grade 80, 100) and proof coil: welded-link-chain-nacm-grades-30-43-70-80-100.
- No file: a chain link's end radii, weld and the link bend are not published as numbers in the tables read. McMaster-Carr sells chain with per-part STEP; its chain categories are linked, not copied.

## Questions

**What is the pitch of 8 mm DIN 766 chain?**

24 mm (fasteners.eu), with minimum inside width 9.6 mm and maximum outside width 27.2 mm in that table.

**Do the sources agree on the inside width of DIN 766 chain?**

No. For d 10 fasteners.eu prints b1 = 12 mm and SCIC Chain prints 14 mm; pitch and outside width agree. Both are on the page.

**What are the inside length and minimum inside width of 5 mm DIN 5685 chain?**

Short link: 21 ± 1.1 mm and 9.0 mm minimum (RS Components); long link: 35 ± 1.8 mm and 9.0 mm minimum.
