Short-link chain DIN 766 and DIN 5685: wire diameter, pitch, inside and outside width — dimension sheet Source: Xem Studio, https://xemstudio.com/objects/short-link-chain-din-766-din-5685/ (sheet CC BY 4.0) Basis: fasteners.eu and SCIC Chain for DIN 766 (they disagree on b1 above 10 mm and are shown side by side); RS Components, Kramp and Load-Tech for DIN 5685; numbers only, load ratings left out Catalog version: 2026-10-20 Sizes: see table below - DIN 766 is the short-link round steel chain (calibrated, for chain wheels); the columns are the standard's letters as the sources head them: d wire diameter, t pitch (inside length), b1 minimum inside width, b2 maximum outside width, length of 11 pitches, mass per metre. The fasteners.eu table lists d 4 to 42 mm; the SCIC Chain table lists 10 to 42 mm (it names its rows d × t, so 10 × 28 is d 10, t 28). - The two DIN 766 tables agree on pitch t and outside width b2 for every size they share (10, 13, 16, 18, 20, 23, 26, 30, 36, 42) but not on the minimum inside width b1: fasteners.eu prints b1 = 1.2 × d (for example 12 for d 10, 15.6 for d 13, 24 for d 20, 50 for d 42) while SCIC prints b1 = 1.4 × d at most sizes (14 for d 10, 18 for d 13, 28 for d 20, 54.5 for d 42). Both are shown; which belongs to your edition of the standard is not decided here. Check b1 against the standard you work to before sizing a mating part. - DIN 5685 is the short, medium and long link chain family (not calibrated). The RS Components datasheet gives, for each chain size, the link style, the inside link length with its tolerance and the minimum inside link width; its table covers 2.5 to 7 mm and carries the note that the 6.5 mm row is not a preferred size covered by DIN 5685:1991 (the note's placement in the extracted text is ambiguous; it is repeated here for the 6.5 mm row only). One Kramp listing (Ø5 mm × 21 mm, sold as DIN 5685 short link) shows inner length 21 mm, which agrees with RS, inner width 10 mm and outer sizes 31 × 20 mm; that listing is a sold chain's actual size, not a limit, and the RS minimum inside width for Ø5 is 9.0 mm. Load-Tech's DIN 5685A table (gauge, step, width B) is shown as printed with its own caution that actual dimensions may differ; it is not cross-checked against RS (its step values equal RS inside lengths for 3, 4, 5 and 6 mm, which is what 'step' appears to mean there). - Chain for lifting is not covered here: DIN 766 and DIN 5685 are general-purpose chain, and the page leaves out breaking and working loads on purpose. Alloy lifting chain (Grade 80, 100) and proof coil: welded-link-chain-nacm-grades-30-43-70-80-100. - No file: a chain link's end radii, weld and the link bend are not published as numbers in the tables read. McMaster-Carr sells chain with per-part STEP; its chain categories are linked, not copied. standard / link style designation wire dia d (mm) pitch t / inside length (mm) inside width b1 (mm) outside width b2 (mm) length of 11 t (mm) mass (kg/m) second source / cross-check DIN 766 4 × 16 4 16 4.8 min 13.6 max 176 0.32 — DIN 766 5 × 18.5 5 18.5 6 min 17 max 203.5 0.5 — DIN 766 6 × 18.5 6 18.5 7.2 min 20.4 max 203.5 0.8 — DIN 766 7 × 22 7 22 8.4 min 23.8 max 242 1.1 — DIN 766 8 × 24 8 24 9.6 min 27.2 max 264 1.4 — DIN 766 9 × 27 9 27 10.8 min 30.6 max 297 1.8 — DIN 766 10 × 28 10 28 12 min 36 max 308 2.3 pitch 28, b1 14 min, b2 36 max DIN 766 11 × 31 11 31 13.2 min 40 max 341 2.7 — DIN 766 13 × 36 13 36 15.6 min 47 max 396 3.9 pitch 36, b1 18 min, b2 47 max DIN 766 14 × 41 14 41 16.8 min 50 max 451 4.4 — DIN 766 16 × 45 16 45 19.2 min 58 max 495 5.8 pitch 45, b1 22.5 min, b2 58 max DIN 766 18 × 50 18 50 21.6 min 65 max 550 7.4 pitch 50, b1 25 min, b2 65 max DIN 766 20 × 56 20 56 24 min 72 max 616 9 pitch 56, b1 28 min, b2 72 max DIN 766 23 × 64 23 64 27.6 min 83 max 704 12 pitch 64, b1 32 min, b2 83 max DIN 766 26 × 73 26 73 31.2 min 94 max 803 15 pitch 73, b1 34 min, b2 94 max DIN 766 28 × 78 28 78 33.6 min 101 max 858 18 — DIN 766 30 × 84 30 84 36 min 108 max 924 20 pitch 84, b1 39 min, b2 108 max DIN 766 32 × 90 32 90 38.4 min 115 max 990 23 — DIN 766 36 × 101 36 101 43.2 min 130 max 1111 29 pitch 101, b1 47 min, b2 130 max DIN 766 40 × 112 40 112 48 min 144 max 1232 35 — DIN 766 42 × 118 42 118 50 min 151 max 1298 40 pitch 118, b1 54.5 min, b2 151 max DIN 766 33 × 92 33 92 not in that table not in that table — — SCIC only: pitch 92, b1 43 min, b2 119 max DIN 766 39 × 109 39 109 not in that table not in that table — — SCIC only: pitch 109, b1 50.5 min, b2 140 max DIN 5685 long link (RS) 2.5 × inside length 24 2.5 inside length 24 ± 1.2 4.5 min — — — — DIN 5685 short link (RS) 2.5 × inside length 14 2.5 inside length 14 ± 0.7 4.5 min — — — — DIN 5685 long link (RS) 3 × inside length 26 3 inside length 26 ± 1.3 5.4 min — — — — DIN 5685 medium link (RS) 3 × inside length 21 3 inside length 21 ± 1.1 5.4 min — — — — DIN 5685 short link (RS) 3 × inside length 16 3 inside length 16 ± 0.8 5.4 min — — — — DIN 5685 long link (RS) 4 × inside length 32 4 inside length 32 ± 1.6 7.2 min — — — — DIN 5685 short link (RS) 4 × inside length 19 4 inside length 19 ± 1.0 7.2 min — — — — DIN 5685 long link (RS) 5 × inside length 35 5 inside length 35 ± 1.8 9.0 min — — — — DIN 5685 short link (RS) 5 × inside length 21 5 inside length 21 ± 1.1 9.0 min — — — Kramp Ø5 × 21 short link: inner length 21 (agrees), inner width 10, outer width 20, outer length 31 DIN 5685 long link (RS) 6 × inside length 42 6 inside length 42 ± 2.1 10.8 min — — — — DIN 5685 short link (RS) 6 × inside length 24 6 inside length 24 ± 1.2 10.8 min — — — — DIN 5685 long link (RS) 6.5 × inside length 36 6.5 inside length 36 ± 2.4 12.0 min — — — — DIN 5685 long link (RS) 7 × inside length 49 7 inside length 49 ± 2.5 12.6 min — — — — DIN 5685A (Load-Tech, as printed) 2×14 2 step 14 — width B 8 — — weights and loads on the page left out DIN 5685A (Load-Tech, as printed) 3×16 3 step 16 — width B 11 — — weights and loads on the page left out DIN 5685A (Load-Tech, as printed) 4×19 4 step 19 — width B 15 — — weights and loads on the page left out DIN 5685A (Load-Tech, as printed) 5×21 5 step 21 — width B 19 — — weights and loads on the page left out DIN 5685A (Load-Tech, as printed) 6×24 6 step 24 — width B 22 — — weights and loads on the page left out DIN 5685A (Load-Tech, as printed) 7×28 7 step 28 — width B 27 — — weights and loads on the page left out DIN 5685A (Load-Tech, as printed) 8×32 8 step 32 — width B 32 — — weights and loads on the page left out DIN 5685A (Load-Tech, as printed) 10×40 10 step 40 — width B 40 — — weights and loads on the page left out DIN 5685A (Load-Tech, as printed) 12×48 12 step 48 — width B 48 — — weights and loads on the page left out Files elsewhere (not hosted by Xem Studio;
