> What are the dimensions of a standard soup can?

- Category: Hardware › Found & household materials
- Kind: Standard part
- Basis: US can-size nomenclature (diameter × height in inches and sixteenths: 300 × 407 = 3 0/16 in × 4 7/16 in); tinplate 0.2 mm; seams about 1.2 mm proud of the body

## Notes

- Condensed soup (Campbell's size, 211 × 400): Ø68.3 × 101.6 mm. Standard vegetable can (300 × 407): Ø76.2 × 112.7 mm. 303 × 406: Ø81.0 × 111.1. #2 (307 × 409): Ø87.3 × 115.9. Tuna (307 × 113): Ø87.3 × 46.0. #2½ (401 × 411): Ø103.2 × 119.1. #10 (603 × 700): Ø157.2 × 177.8.
- Steel (tinplate) is 0.18–0.22 mm, magnetic, solderable and takes a flame: it is the hot-end cylinder for the bigger can engines where aluminium would soften. The double seams stand 1.2 mm proud of the body; a printed cap must clear Ø(body + 2.4).
- Opened with a safety (side-cut) opener the rim stays smooth and the lid can go back on as a loose cap; a top-cut opener leaves a sharp edge: deburr with a file before a diaphragm goes near it.
