# Tee nuts (T-nuts) for wood, 3 and 4 prong, 4-40 to 3/8-16: barrel, flange, prong height, drill size + hole gauge

> What size hole for a 1/4-20 tee nut, and what are the barrel diameter, flange diameter and prong height?

- Category: Hardware › Fasteners
- Kind: Standard part
- Basis: AFT Fasteners' 4-prong table and Tanner Bolt & Nut's 3- and 4-prong table (they agree on every 4-prong row read), McFeely's stainless and UltraGrip tee nut sizes; one hole-gauge file

## Overall (mm)

| length | width | height |
|---|---|---|
| 117.0 | 19.5 | 3.0 |

**Exact dimensions.** Every file is drawn at true size with no tolerance added. The holes and pins that meet another part are listed below under Mating features, with the fit each joint needs; open those by your process's clearance before making the part.

## Notes

- Inches. The letters are the makers': H barrel height (length), G flange diameter, F barrel diameter, A prong height and T 'material thickness' (the sheet the nut is made of; the sheets do not say it is the flange thickness, so it is shown under their name). Drill size is the makers' installation hole. AFT and Tanner say there is no single standard for tee nuts and that these values are a guide; Tanner's tolerances are H and G ±1/32, F and T ±.015, A ±1/32 (inch). Material is C1004-10 low-carbon steel (AFT).
- AFT's 4-prong table and Tanner's agree on every 4-prong row read. Tanner also lists the 3-prong style (used in harder materials to limit splitting; 4-prong in hard or soft woods) and 4-40 sizes. A few rows have two values in the source: 5/16-18 × 5/8 four-prong is .375–.390 barrel, 1/4–5/16 prong height, .060–.063 T and 3/8 or 25/64 drill; 1/4-20 × 1/2 three-prong prong height is 7/32–1/4. Tanner's 5/16-18 × 1/2 3-prong is .360 / 3/8 where its 4-prong is .390 / 13/32; those are as printed.
- McFeely's stainless tee nuts: barrel height 9/32 for 10-24, 3/8 for 1/4-20, 1/2 for 5/16-18 and 7/16 for 3/8-16, base diameter 3/4, 3/4, 7/8 and 1 in, and 4 prongs. Its drill sizes carry an asterisk with no footnote ('test on scrap'). Its UltraGrip rows print values that do not read consistently (for example a 5/8 in height against a 5/16 in barrel) and are not tabulated.
- Files: one hole gauge, a plate with holes at the nine published drill sizes (13/64 to 29/64 in). Plate thickness, spacing and corner radius are Xem's choices. No tee nut model is drawn: the number of prongs and their width and shape are not published as numbers in the sheets read, only their height.
- Metric tee nuts (M6, M8) were not found in a source with checkable dimensions, so none are shown. Hammer-in / knock-in inserts are sold by McMaster-Carr with per-part STEP; its tee-nut-insert page is linked, not copied.

## Questions

**What hole for a 1/4-20 tee nut?**

5/16 in on AFT's and Tanner's tables for every 1/4-20 barrel length; barrel diameter .305 in, flange 3/4 in.

**How long are the prongs on a 1/4-20 × 3/8 tee nut?**

7/32 in on the AFT 4-prong table (1/4 in on Tanner's 3-prong table).

**Is there a standard for tee nut dimensions?**

AFT and Tanner both say there is no single standard for T-nuts; the sizes are a guide.
