# Wedge anchors for concrete, Simpson Strong-Bolt 2: drill bit, fixture hole, wrench size, torque, stocked lengths, 1/4 to 1 in

> What drill bit, fixture hole and torque does a 1/2 in wedge anchor need in concrete?

## Notes

- Inches. Installation data per anchor diameter: drill bit (a carbide bit of the nominal diameter, same as the anchor), minimum fixture (clearance) hole, wrench size and installation torque in ft-lbf for carbon steel (and stainless where printed). The stainless sheet agrees with the carbon sheet on drill bit, fixture hole and wrench size for 1/4 to 3/4 in and on the stainless torques (4, 30, 65, 80, 150). The 1 in size is carbon steel only on the sheet read. Stocked lengths (anchor length in inches, carbon steel, drill bit equal to the nominal diameter) are from the product-data table: 1/4 in: 1-3/4, 2-1/4, 3-1/4; 3/8 in: 2-3/4, 3, 3-1/2, 3-3/4, 5, 7; 1/2 in: 3-3/4, 4-1/4, 4-3/4, 5-1/2, 7, 8-1/2, 10; 5/8 in: 4-1/2, 5, 6, 7, 8-1/2, 10; 3/4 in: 5-1/2, 6-1/4, 7, 8-1/2, 10; 1 in: 7, 10, 13.
- Left out on purpose: nominal embedment, minimum hole depth, critical and minimum edge distance, spacing and concrete thickness. The catalog's design table was read as flattened text in which the values could not be aligned to diameters (for example twelve embedment values for the stainless sheet), and the product-data thread lengths use mixed numbers that the text read ran together, so none is given. Read them from the Simpson catalog or the ICC-ES report for the anchor you use. Load values are not given. Torque is the setting torque after the anchor is set in concrete; Simpson's sheet gives it for concrete installation.
- Not on this page: the clip, wedge and washer geometry (not given as numbers by the sources read), and other wedge anchors (Hilti Kwik Bolt TZ2, Red Head, Powers). No file: a wedge anchor is a rod with a thread and a clip; no complete set of numbers was read. Simpson's product page is linked as the maker source (CAD / BIM downloads are listed there where offered); expansion plugs for masonry are on ribbed-plastic-expansion-anchors.

## Questions

**What drill bit for a 1/2 in wedge anchor?**

A 1/2 in carbide bit (drill bit equals the anchor diameter); minimum fixture hole 9/16 in, wrench 3/4 in, torque 60 ft-lbf carbon steel and 65 ft-lbf stainless (Simpson Strong-Bolt 2).

**What lengths does a 3/8 Strong-Bolt 2 come in?**

2-3/4, 3, 3-1/2, 3-3/4, 5 and 7 in in the carbon-steel product data.

**What is the installation torque for a 3/4 in wedge anchor?**

150 ft-lbf (both carbon and stainless), with a 7/8 in minimum fixture hole and a 1-1/8 in wrench.
