# Wire rope sizes and weights: 6×19 IWRC and fibre core, 7×7, 7×19, 1×19 — diameter in inches and mm, weight per foot

> How much does 1/4 in, 3/8 in and 1/2 in 6×19 wire rope weigh per foot, and what are the diameters of 7×7, 7×19 and 1×19 cable?

## Notes

- Diameter is the nominal rope diameter in inches as each source prints it (measured across the outer crown of opposite strands, which the Campbell catalogue states); the mm column is that diameter converted (× 25.4, computed). Weight is as printed: pounds per foot (6×19 sources) or pounds per 1000 ft (Campbell); the last column converts each to pounds per 100 ft (computed). Metric kg/m is not given by these sources.
- 6×19 construction is six strands of 19 wires (the class covers 6×19 Seale, Filler wire and others, so the number of wires per strand varies inside the class); IWRC is an independent wire rope core, FC a fibre core; 7×7 and 7×19 are seven strands (one core strand and six outer strands) of 7 or 19 wires, 1×19 is a single strand of 19 wires. These are general definitions; the sources read do not tabulate wire diameters or lay lengths, so none is shown.
- The 6×19 IWRC weights disagree between makers by a few percent, and by more at some sizes: 1/2 in is 0.44 lb/ft (Unirope) against 0.46 (Sky Dog); 5/8 in 0.69 against 0.72; 3/4 in 0.99 against 1.04; 1 in 1.76 against 1.85. Unirope's fibre-core column is lighter than its IWRC column at every size, as expected. The Lexco stainless 6×19 IWRC weights agree with Sky Dog's galvanized figures at 1/2 in (0.458 and 0.46), 5/8 in (0.715 and 0.72) and 1 in (1.87 and 1.85) but differ at 3/4 in (0.922 against 1.04) and 7/8 in (1.430 against 1.56); no source explains the spread. All are shown as printed.
- Campbell's 1×19 galvanized row for 1/16 in printed 0.85 lb per 1000 ft, which is inconsistent with the 3/32 in row (20.0) of the same table, so that row is not shown; the 1×19 rows from 3/32 up, and the 7×7 rows from 1/16 and 7×19 rows from 3/32, are kept as printed. Campbell's own note: breaking strengths are for comparison only and operating loads should respect the design factor; breaking strengths, minimum breaking force grades and safe working loads are left out of this page on purpose, because they depend on the rope grade (IPS, EIPS, stainless) and lay.
- No file: a rope is a helix of strands whose wire sizes and lay length are not in the tables read, so a drawn rope would be invented. Terminations: wire-rope-thimbles-din-6899, wire-rope-clips-crosby-g450-g429, shackles-bow-d-crosby-g209-g210-g2130. McMaster-Carr sells wire rope by the foot with per-part STEP; its category is linked, not copied.

## Questions

**How much does 1/2 in 6×19 IWRC wire rope weigh per foot?**

0.44 lb/ft (Unirope) or 0.46 lb/ft (Sky Dog Rigging) for galvanized steel-core rope; Lexco's stainless 6×19 IWRC is 0.458 lb/ft.

**What does 3/16 in 7×19 cable weigh?**

65 lb per 1000 ft, 6.5 lb per 100 ft (Campbell, galvanized); 7×7 is 62 lb per 1000 ft at 3/16 in.

**How is wire rope diameter measured?**

Across the outer crown of opposite strands, not across the valleys (Campbell catalogue).
