# Wire rope thimbles, DIN 6899: rope diameter, groove width, overall and inside length and width (two published tables)

> What are the dimensions of a DIN 6899 wire rope thimble for a 6, 8, 10 or 12 mm rope?

- Category: Hardware › Rigging & lifting
- Kind: Standard part
- Basis: Jinbo Marine's DIN 6899 B size table (rope 2.5 to 30 mm) and Load-Tech's DIN 6899 table (3 to 48 mm); the two disagree on the overall length, so both are shown; numbers only

## Notes

- Two tables, each with its own letters, in mm. Jinbo Marine (form B): rope diameter, groove width a, overall length B, inside length I, inside width C, back thickness s, weight per 100. Load-Tech: designation (for example 9x10), rope range, and B, F, H, A, D, E. The letters of one table are not those of the other and neither source defines them in text.
- They agree on the inside dimensions: pairing the two tables by groove width (Jinbo's a = Load-Tech's B, 14 sizes from 4 to 32 mm), Load-Tech's H equals Jinbo's inside length I and Load-Tech's D equals Jinbo's inside width C in every pair (for example 38 and 24 at the 9 / 10 mm size; 45 and 28 at 11 / 12; 58 and 36 at 15 / 16). They differ on the overall length: Load-Tech's A minus Jinbo's B runs from -1 mm (7 / 8 mm size: 50 against 51) to +14 mm (26 / 28 mm size: 166 against 152); for the 9 / 10 mm thimble Jinbo's B is 57 mm and Load-Tech's A is 59, for 11 / 12 mm 64 against 70, for 20 / 22 mm 114 against 126. The sources do not say why, so neither is called wrong here: check the thimble you buy.
- Jinbo's page lists the material as Q235 and the size range as 1/8 in to 1-1/4 in, and shows the table under the name DIN 6899 B; the Load-Tech table does not name the form. Load ratings are not given. Tied to rigging: shackles, clips and turnbuckles are on the pages linked below.
- No file: the groove cross-section and the side-profile curve are not given as numbers and the two tables disagree on the length. McMaster-Carr sells wire rope thimbles (including Federal Spec FF-T-276) with per-part STEP; linked, not copied.

## Questions

**How long is a DIN 6899 thimble for a 10 mm rope?**

Jinbo Marine lists 57 mm overall (B) for the 9 mm rope / 10 mm groove; Load-Tech lists 59 mm (A) for the 9x10 size. Both give 38 mm inside length and 24 mm inside width.

**What is the inside width of a thimble for 12 mm rope?**

28 mm (Jinbo C = 28 for the 11 mm rope / 12 mm groove; Load-Tech D = 28 for 11x12).

**Do the tables agree?**

On the inside length and width yes, in all 14 sizes compared; on the overall length no: Load-Tech's A is between 1 mm shorter and 14 mm longer than Jinbo's B.
