# Woven wire mesh sizes: mesh count, wire diameter, opening and open area — 2 to 325 mesh (square weave, market and mill grade)

> What is the wire diameter, opening size and open area of 4, 8, 10, 20, 40 and 100 mesh woven wire cloth?

- Category: Hardware › Materials & stock
- Kind: Standard part
- Basis: Woven Wire Products' market-grade table (39 rows, 2 to 325 mesh), its stainless 14 to 20 mesh sheets and Newark Wire Cloth's mill-grade table (29 rows, 2 to 60 mesh), with the open area recomputed; numbers only

## Notes

- Mesh count is the number of openings per linear inch, counted from the centre of one wire to the same point 1 inch away. For square plain weave with wire diameter d (in) and count m, the opening is 1/m − d and the open area is (1 − m × d)² (as a fraction). The last two columns apply those two formulas to the printed mesh and wire diameter; they are computed here as a check and match the printed opening and open area to rounding in every row.
- A mesh count does not fix the wire: the same count is made with several wire diameters, which changes the opening and open area. Woven Wire Products lists 4 mesh with 0.047 in wire (0.203 in opening, 65.9% open) and with 0.063 in wire (0.187 in, 56.0%); Newark's mill-grade 4 × 4 uses 0.035 in wire (0.215 in, 74.0%). The two makers' tables are different grades (market grade against mill grade) and differ at nearly every count; state the wire diameter, not just the mesh, when you order.
- Mesh sizes are normally ordered as 'mesh × mesh × wire diameter' (for example 10 × 10 × 0.025). The Woven Wire Products stainless rows (14 to 20 mesh, 0.009 in wire) are the fine-wire, high-open-area version and carry T-304 and T-316 data sheets on the maker's site (not read). Wire diameters in mm are converted × 25.4 (computed) where the maker does not print them. Other weaves (twill, Dutch), rectangular mesh, space cloth and welded wire mesh are not covered here.
- Sieves and screens: US sieve numbers and mesh counts are close but not identical series; this page lists wire cloth only. Not to be confused with expanded metal (expanded-metal-standard-designations-swd-lwd), perforated sheet (perforated-metal-round-hole-standard-patterns) or the regenerator screens on this site. Gauge for wire diameters: awg-wire-gauge-table-astm-b258 and swg-standard-wire-gauge-table. No file: woven cloth is wire crossing over and under wire, and the crimp is not published as numbers.

## Questions

**What is the opening of 10 mesh wire cloth?**

0.075 in with 0.025 in wire (Woven Wire Products, 56.3% open) or 0.080 in with 0.020 in wire (Newark mill grade, 64.0% open): the opening is 1/10 − the wire diameter.

**How do I calculate open area of wire mesh?**

(1 − mesh count × wire diameter in inches)² × 100. For 20 mesh with 0.016 in wire that is (1 − 0.32)² = 46.2%, which is what Woven Wire Products prints.

**What does mesh count mean?**

Openings per linear inch, measured from wire centre to the same point one inch along. 100 mesh has 100 openings to the inch.

**Does the same mesh always have the same opening?**

No. 4 mesh is 0.203 in open with 0.047 in wire and 0.187 in with 0.063 in wire (Woven Wire Products); the opening depends on the wire.
