Dead-beat (Graham) escapement: escape wheel and anchor

How does a dead-beat escapement work? · Hardware · basis: Xem Studio design following Brown No. 289 (1868)

Also called: deadbeat escapement, anchor escapement, clock escapement, pendulum escapement, graham escapement, escape de áncora sin retroceso (Graham), Grahamhemmung (ruhende Ankerhemmung)

Notes

  • An anchor rocked by a pendulum lets the escape wheel advance one tooth every two beats: a tooth is locked on one pallet, released as the anchor swings, gives the pallet a small push across its slanted impulse face, and the wheel drops until the other pallet catches the next tooth.
  • Dead-beat (Graham, 1715): the locking faces are arcs about the anchor pivot, so while a tooth rests on them the wheel stands perfectly still (the seconds hand does not recoil) and the pendulum swings freer — the escapement of precision regulators.
  • Drawn with a tooth tip resting on the entry pallet's locking face (contact only, wheel turned -4.83°). Brown's No. 289.
  • Parts (each has its own page): escape-wheel-30t-d50, deadbeat-anchor-for-30t-d50, dowel-pins-metric.
  • Brown's movement No. 289 (1868) shows it; this model is a Xem Studio design following his figure, every part at true size.
