Notes

  • A fly rod is far over 1 m; the part people design around is the reel foot and the seat that grips it. The American Fly Fishing Trade Association (AFFTA) publishes a reel-foot drawing; the numbers here are as Global FlyFisher quotes it (with tolerances) in a survey that measured 18 reels against it. The drawing itself is not posted publicly.
  • Real reels vary: in that survey only one of 18 feet fell inside both the width and length tolerance (widths 11.87 to 15.28 mm, lengths 57.48 to 65.05 mm). Design a seat or holder with this nominal and check your reel.
  • Numbers only: the end radius, foot thickness and stem height are not published, so no file is drawn.
  • Spinning- and casting-reel feet have no published standard; measure your reel once.
