How does a kanawa tsugi joint work? · Hardware · basis: Xem Studio design — geometry computed in the generator from traditional proportions

Also called: kanawa tsugi, 金輪継ぎ, kanawa joint, japanese keyed splice, japanese post splice, empalme japonés con llave, japanischer Stoß mit Keil

Notes

  • Woodworking joint drawn for 3D printing: the parts lock together by shape, so a print can be joined without glue or screws. Drawn at true size with the parts line to line (zero gap) in their assembled position — add your printer's fit allowance to the mating faces (your AI or slicer can do this).
  • A hooked scarf locked by a square key driven through its middle, so it holds in every direction — used for posts and beams.

Questions

What is the key for?

It stops the halves sliding sideways and draws the hooks tight.
