Nylon-insert lock nuts (nyloc), ISO 7040 and DIN 985, M3–M36: width across flats, height, bearing diameter + M10–M30 envelope files

How tall and how wide is an M10 or M12 nyloc nut, and is DIN 985 the same as ISO 7040? · Standard part · basis: iTeh's ISO 7040:2012 sample Table 1 (M3 to M36), a DIN 985 sheet (M3 to M20), McMaster-Carr's DIN 985 listing as cross-check; six envelope files

Also called: nyloc nut dimensions, m10 nyloc nut height, m12 nylock nut width across flats, iso 7040 vs din 985, m8 nyloc nut size, nylon insert nut m16 dimensions, din 985 m10 17 mm, nyloc nut m20 height, nylock nut pocket dimensions, iso 7040 m10 16 mm

Exact dimensions. Every file is drawn at true size with no tolerance added. The holes and pins that meet another part are listed below under Mating features, with the fit each joint needs; open those by your process's clearance before making the part. Mating features

Notes

  • ISO 7040 columns (mm): P pitch; s width across flats (max / min); e across corners (min); dw bearing-face diameter (min); m nut-body height (min); h overall height including the insert collar (max / min). The M14 size is marked 'to be avoided' in the standard (brackets). Only coarse pitch is tabulated. iTeh's text says the dimensions correspond to ISO 4032 with the prevailing-torque feature added.
  • DIN 985 columns, as the sheet labels them: F width across flats (max / min), G across corners (min), H overall thickness (max / min), I wrenching height (min). DIN 985 and ISO 7040 are different heights: M10 is 10 mm overall in DIN 985 (McMaster also lists M10 as 17 mm wide by 10 mm high) but 11.9 mm max in ISO 7040, and the across-flats size differs from M10 up: DIN 985 17, 19, 22 for M10, M12, M14 against ISO 7040's 16, 18, 21. Up to M8 the across-flats sizes are the same (M3 5.5, M4 7, M5 8, M6 10, M8 13) while the overall heights differ (e.g. M6 6 in DIN 985 against 8 max in ISO 7040). The existing page nyloc-nuts-metric shows the DIN 985 heights for M2.5–M8.
  • Files: Xem-drawn envelopes for the ISO 7040 sizes M10, M12, M16, M20, M24, M30: a hexagon of the maximum width across flats, at the maximum overall height h, with a plain bore at the nominal thread diameter. The chamfer, the dome-shaped collar (outside diameter not given in the table) and the thread are not modelled; for a hex pocket, the width across flats and the overall height are the numbers you need.

Questions

How big is an M10 nyloc nut?

ISO 7040: 16 mm across flats, 11.9 mm max overall height. DIN 985: 17 mm across flats, 10 mm overall height (McMaster also lists 17 × 10).

Are DIN 985 and ISO 7040 the same?

No. The sheets differ in overall height at every size and in width across flats from M10 up.
