Oil seal housing and shaft (DIN 3760): bore H8, shaft h11, lead-in chamfers, groove, roughness and hardness

What housing bore tolerance, shaft tolerance, chamfer and surface finish does a radial shaft seal (oil seal) need? · Standard part · basis: DICHTA's rotary shaft seal brochure and catalogue (H8 / h11 tables, chamfers, roughness, hardness, contact band), Seals-Shop's installation guide (groove and shaft-end chamfer tables), Tameson's manual and the ISO 6194-1:1982 sample, compared; numbers only

Also called: oil seal housing bore tolerance, shaft seal bore tolerance h8, oil seal shaft tolerance h11, shaft chamfer for oil seal, oil seal lead in chamfer angle, oil seal groove depth, shaft seal surface finish ra, oil seal shaft hardness hrc, din 3760 housing bore, rotary seal bore chamfer, radial shaft seal installation, oil seal seat depth, shaft seal groove width b2

Notes

  • Housing: bore tolerance H8 for metric seals (DIN 3760) in all three maker documents; the table lists the H8 band by bore range (to 250 mm). The ranges from 250 mm up are left out: DICHTA's figure for 250 to 315 mm (+0.084) and the general ISO 286 page read for comparison disagreed there. Shaft: h11 by shaft range (to 250 mm), same table source. Both tables are DICHTA's, quoting DIN 3760; the bands up to 30 mm agree with a general ISO 286 table read for comparison (cadforum.cz).
  • Where the makers differ the rows show both: housing bore roughness, housing lead-in angle (10° to 20° against 5° to 10°), shaft hardness (45 or 55 HRC base) and shaft Rz. Follow the seal maker's datasheet for the seal you buy.
  • Shaft-end chamfer table (Seals-Shop): headings 'Chamfer length for shaft end', d1, d3, R, with d3 given as d1 minus a value and R as 2 to 12; the page does not define d3 or R (its figure is not in the text), so they are shown as printed. DICHTA's rule is a 15° to 30° chamfer with a rounded and polished edge.
  • Housing groove: Seals-Shop's table (b, b1 = 0.85 × b, b2 = b + 0.3, r2 max) for ring widths 7, 8, 10, 12, 15 and 20 mm; DICHTA prints the same b, t1 min = 0.85 × b, t2 min = b + 0.3 and r2 max 0.5 / 0.7 without saying which type it covers. Neither source says which of b1 / b2 or t1 / t2 is the depth; do not read them as one.
  • Not tabulated: the width tolerance and the outside-diameter tolerance of the seal (the ISO 6194-1:1982 sample text was too scrambled to read); inch-series (TCM, CR) housings; pressure and speed limits (they depend on the seal).
  • No file: every figure here is a tolerance, finish or rule; a housing drawn from them would need a choice of seat depth the sources do not fix. Seal sizes: radial-shaft-seals-din-3760-iso-6194 (with case envelopes).

Questions

What bore tolerance does an oil seal housing need?

ISO H8 for metric seals (DIN 3760): +0.027 / 0 mm for a 10 to 18 mm bore, +0.033 for 18 to 30, +0.039 for 30 to 50, +0.046 for 50 to 80 mm (DICHTA); Seals-Shop and Tameson also name H8.

What shaft tolerance and finish for a radial shaft seal?

Shaft h11 (for example 0 / -0.130 mm for 18 to 30 mm), Ra 0.2 to 0.8 µm, Rmax 6.3 µm, no machining swirl. Hardness is 45 HRC or more in DIN 3760 per DICHTA, 55 HRC per Seals-Shop; both sources agree on a 0.3 mm hardness depth.

What chamfer should a shaft have for an oil seal?

DICHTA: 15° to 30°, edge rounded and polished. Seals-Shop's table gives the end diameter d3 = d1 - 1.5 for shafts under 10 mm up to d1 - 11 over 240 mm (letters as printed). Tameson: 1 mm radius or a DIN chamfer.
