Notes

  • A heavy hammer on a long helve, pivoted at its tail, rests on a cam shaft: each lobe lifts the helve and slips off its tip, so the hammer falls on the anvil under its own weight — four blows per turn with a four-lobe cam.
  • Here the helve is pivoted 60 mm from the cam's axis and 20 mm above it; the lobes rise from R12 to R26 over 70° (cycloidal) and drop straight back. Drawn with the cam at 40° and the helve resting on a lobe (helve at 10.81°); the anvil sits 0.5 mm under the head's lowest position, when the helve rests on the cam's R12 base circle (-2.84°).
  • Brown's No. 72 (cam lifting a tilt hammer four times a revolution); No. 353 is the version with the cam acting on the tail.

  • Brown's movement No. 72 (1868) shows it; this model is a Xem Studio design following his figure, every part at true size.
