Notes

  • A wing fence is a chordwise plate on the upper surface that blocks spanwise boundary-layer flow toward the tips of a swept wing.
  • NACA tests of a 45 deg swept wing found 'severe longitudinal instability' without fences; fences greatly increased the lift capacity of the outer sections, and five fences per panel brought the pitching moment close to linear except for a mild break at the stall (NACA RM A53I21).
  • The best single fence location was 50% semispan (NACA).
  • Used on: NACA 45 deg swept research wing.
  • The file is a reference example built by Xem Studio from the numbers above. Sizes the sources do not fix are illustrative; scale the example to your own vehicle.
