Butt hinges: leaf height, leaf width, overall width, leaf thickness and screw count (McMaster-Carr template and mortise-mount hinges) + door-size chart
What are the leaf size, overall width and number of screws of a 3 in, 3-1/2 in, 4 in or 4-1/2 in butt hinge, and which hinge size suits a door? · Standard part · basis: McMaster-Carr's mortise-mount butt hinge page (entry door template hinges and small mortise-mount hinges with holes, as printed), DK Hardware's door-size chart, and Hager's template sheet for screw sizes; numbers only
Also called: butt hinge size chart, door hinge dimensions, 4 inch door hinge leaf width, 3.5 inch hinge dimensions, template hinge A156.7, full mortise hinge size, hinge screw hole pattern, 4-1/2 hinge dimensions, hinge size for 36 inch door
Exact dimensions. Every file is drawn at true size with no tolerance added. The holes and pins that meet another part are listed below under Mating features, with the fit each joint needs; open those by your process's clearance before making the part. Mating features

Notes
- McMaster-Carr rows are as printed: door leaf height and width, frame leaf height and width, overall width (open), leaf thickness (printed for the mortise-mount hinges only), fasteners (screw holes) and part number. The entry-door template hinges are 3 to 5 in (door leaf height) with 6 or 8 holes; the small mortise-mount hinges run from 1 in to 3 in leaf height with 4 or 6 holes and 0.050 to 0.060 in leaf thickness. In every row printed, the overall (open) width is twice the leaf width (for example 4-1/2 x 2 in leaves: overall 4 in; 5 x 2-1/2: overall 5 in; 1 in hinge with 1/2 in leaves: overall 1 in), and door and frame leaves are the same size; a 4-1/2 in hinge comes with a 2 in or a 2-1/4 in leaf.
- Hole pattern (hole diameter and position): neither the McMaster page nor the Hager sheet read here gives hole positions as numbers. ANSI/BHMA A156.7 'template hinge dimensions' (length, width, thickness, offset and screw hole spacing) is the standard for the full-mortise template hinge; its figures are in the paid standard and its free preview shows only the scope, so no hole position is given. Hager's electric full-mortise template hinge sheet (EMN, sizes 4-1/2 x 4 and 4-1/2 x 4-1/2, 1.000 in knuckle) names screws: No. 12 x 1-1/4 in flat-head wood screw and 12-24 x 1/2 in flat-head machine screw, and a Ø1 in frame reinforcement hole.
- DK Hardware's chart pairs door thickness and width to hinge size: 1-3/8 in doors up to 32 in wide use 3-1/2 x 3-1/2 in hinges, 32–36 in use 4 x 4, 1-3/4 in doors 32–36 in use 4-1/2 x 4-1/2 and 36–42 in use 5 x 5, and 2 in or thicker over 42 in use 6 x 5 or 6 x 6. The article gives no gauge or leaf-width values and says a leaf's width is half the open width (pin centre to the outer edge).
- The 35 mm cup (concealed) hinge is a different hinge: cup-hinge-35mm; continuous hinges: continuous-piano-hinges. No file: with no published hole positions a hinge drawing would be invented. McMaster-Carr sells butt hinges with per-part STEP; linked, not copied.

Questions
How wide is a 4 in butt hinge?
McMaster-Carr's 4 in entry-door template hinge has 2 in leaves, an overall (open) width of 4 in and 8 screw holes (part 1494A12).
What hinge size for a 1-3/4 in thick, 36 in wide door?
DK Hardware's chart: 4-1/2 × 4-1/2 in for a 1-3/4 in door 32–36 in wide, or 5 × 5 in for 36–42 in.
What are the screw hole positions of a template hinge?
Not published in the sources read; ANSI/BHMA A156.7 defines them in the paid standard. Hager's sheet names No. 12 × 1-1/4 in wood and 12-24 × 1/2 in machine screws.
