Gas spring end fittings: eyelet and fitting threads M3.5–M14, ball studs Ø8 / Ø10 / Ø13 (M4–M10), ball sockets and forks

What thread do gas spring end fittings use, and what size is the 10 mm ball stud and ball socket? · Standard part · basis: McMaster-Carr's eyelet end-fitting thread table, Lesjöfors' ball stud list (ball diameter, thread, thread length, spanner width), and nb-parts' end-fitting list by thread; numbers only

Also called: gas strut end fitting thread, 10 mm ball socket gas spring, gas spring ball stud M8, ball stud M6 10 mm, gas strut eyelet M8, DIN 71803 ball stud, gas spring fork end, 13 mm ball stud M10, Kugelpfanne Gasfeder

Exact dimensions. Every file is drawn at true size with no tolerance added. The holes and pins that meet another part are listed below under Mating features, with the fit each joint needs; open those by your process's clearance before making the part. Mating features

Notes

  • McMaster-Carr eyelet fittings screw onto the gas spring end thread: M3.5 × 0.6, M5 × 0.8, M6 × 1, M8 × 1.25, M10 × 1.5 and M14 × 1.5 (mm) in zinc alloy, zinc-plated steel, 303 / 316 stainless, aluminum or nylon, with the part numbers shown. The page tells the buyer to match the fitting's thread to the spring's rod and end thread, and each fitting adds its own length to the extended and compressed lengths (see gas-springs-series-and-strokes).
  • Lesjöfors ball studs (d1 = ball diameter, thread, thread length l2, spanner width SW, in mm): BS1 Ø8 M4, BS2 Ø10 M6, BS3 and BS6 Ø10 M8 (steel and AISI 303), BS5 Ø13 M10 and BS7 Ø13 M8, as read from the page. So the common '10 mm ball' stud comes with an M6 or M8 thread; the 13 mm ball with M8 or M10.
  • Ball sockets: a Stabilus catalogue caption names 'ball studs according to DIN 71803 Ø10' as the mating stud for its ball-socket brackets, and McMaster's fitting assortments list ball sockets for 10 mm, 13 mm and 16 mm balls; no socket dimension table was readable, so socket depth and snap force are not given. A machine reading of McMaster's fitting-assortment table mixed the socket's thread with the stud's (a 5/16-18 stud thread appeared next to metric sockets); those stud threads are not used.
  • nb-parts' list is by gas-spring end thread (M5 to M14): the catalogue names ball sockets (WG, KP), eyelets, forks (G), plastic sockets (PKP) and spacers with the sizes in each designation. The designations are the maker's; read the maker's table for the dimensions.
  • Related: RAM-style ball sizes (ram-mount-ball-sizes) and the 17 mm phone-mount ball (phone-mount-ball-17mm) are different balls. No file: no socket or eyelet profile is given as numbers in the sources read. McMaster-Carr sells end fittings with per-part STEP; linked, not copied.

Questions

What thread does a 10 mm ball stud have?

Lesjöfors lists the Ø10 ball stud with an M6 thread (11 mm thread length, SW 8) and with an M8 thread (12 mm, SW 13); the Ø8 ball has M4 and the Ø13 ball M8 or M10.

What are the threads of gas spring eyelet fittings?

M3.5 × 0.6, M5 × 0.8, M6 × 1, M8 × 1.25, M10 × 1.5 and M14 × 1.5 mm on McMaster-Carr's page.

Which DIN covers the 10 mm gas spring ball?

A Stabilus catalogue caption says 'ball studs according to DIN 71803 Ø10'; the DIN sheet itself was not read.
