Gas springs and gas struts: rod / tube diameters, end threads, stroke and extended-length series (nb-parts, SUSPA 16-3, McMaster-Carr)

What stroke and extended lengths do common gas springs come in, and what thread and diameters do the common series use? · Standard part · basis: nb-parts' gas spring catalogue (Ø pairs, threads, stroke ranges), SUSPA's type 16-3 data, and McMaster-Carr's painted-steel eyelet and 316 stainless adjustable-force tables (extended, compressed, stroke); numbers only

Also called: gas strut dimensions, gas spring stroke chart, lift support sizes, gas spring M8, gas spring 10 mm ball socket, Gasdruckfeder, gas spring extended length vs stroke, 8/19 gas spring, 10/22 gas spring, hood strut sizes

Exact dimensions. Every file is drawn at true size with no tolerance added. The holes and pins that meet another part are listed below under Mating features, with the fit each joint needs; open those by your process's clearance before making the part. Mating features

Notes

  • nb-parts rows: model name, the Ø pair as printed (the text does not label which Ø is the rod), the thread as printed and the stroke range in mm. The catalogue's GF 20/40 appears twice with different data (M14, 50–600 mm; M14x1.5, 100–700 mm); both are shown. Extended-length formulas that appeared in a machine reading of the catalogue are not shown because the source text does not state them.
  • SUSPA type 16-3: rod Ø8 mm, tube Ø21.5 mm, tube end M8 x 1.0, rod end M6 x 1.0, tube length 85 to 535 mm, force range 100 to 600 N (the page prints the minimum tube length as 'rod (B) + 37'), all as printed. The page does not give the stroke / extended-length pairs, so none is shown.
  • McMaster-Carr rows are inches as printed on its gas spring page: the painted-steel series with eyelet fittings (extended, compressed and stroke; body Ø0.47 in, rod Ø0.16 in, M4 rod thread) and the 316 stainless adjustable-force series (M8 rod on a 0.88 in body, M10 rod on a 1.17 in body, with extended and compressed force in lbf). The page states that each end fitting adds its own Length 1 to the extended and compressed lengths of the spring, so the figures are for the spring without fittings.
  • End fittings, eyelets and ball sockets and their threads are on gas-spring-end-fittings. The gas-spring-cylinder-18mm page is a different thing (a thermodynamic gas spring in a free-piston Stirling engine); springs covers coil springs.
  • No file: the gas spring is a cylinder and rod whose end fittings and tube ends are not given as numbers. McMaster-Carr sells gas springs, locking gas springs and end fittings with per-part STEP; linked, not copied.

Questions

What is the stroke range of a 10/22 gas spring?

nb-parts lists the GF 10/22 M8 at 75–400 mm stroke (the version with welded eyelets 250–1150 mm); SUSPA's 8 mm rod, 21.5 mm tube spring has M6 rod and M8 tube end threads.

What thread does an 8 mm rod gas spring have?

SUSPA type 16-3 (rod Ø8): rod end M6 x 1.0 and tube end M8 x 1.0. nb-parts' GF 8/19 is listed with M6 and McMaster's 316 stainless 0.38 in rod has an M8 thread.

How much longer is a gas spring when extended?

By its stroke: McMaster lists extended = compressed + stroke (for example 8.26 in = 5.11 in + 3.15 in), before end fittings.
