Glass syringes 1–50 mL (all-glass, ground-glass plunger): barrel and plunger
What are the dimensions of a glass syringe used as a Stirling engine piston? · Hardware · basis: KD Scientific glass syringe datasheet (order codes 78-0871 to 78-0877, the Tomopal glass series; also Tomopal 140-4002 and 140-4550): piston OD, barrel OD D1, barrel collar D2, piston collar D3, length L. Luer cone per ISO 594-1 as given in BD's syringe data sheet.

Notes
- Published per size (KDS / Tomopal datasheet), and drawn exactly: plunger (piston) OD, which is the barrel bore of a ground-glass syringe; barrel OD (D1); barrel collar Ø (D2); piston collar Ø (D3); length L. 1 mL Ø4.80 bore / Ø8.30 OD / L 115.00; 2 mL 6.45 / 9.95 / 115.00; 5 mL 12.60 / 15.40 / 105.00; 10 mL 15.15 / 18.35 / 128.50; 20 mL 20.40 / 24.20 / 145.50; 30 mL 22.90 / 27.30 / 163.00; 50 mL 27.45 / 32.35 / 178.00. Every one of these five numbers is verified for every size drawn.
- Drawn but not published (my geometry, so the parts are whole): the datasheet does not name L's end points, so L is drawn from the Luer tip end to the top of the barrel collar (the plunger is not in it: 1 and 2 mL share L = 115 while their strokes differ); the tip is a male Luer cone per ISO 594-1 (Ø3.925 at the end, 6 % taper, 7.5 long, Ø1.2 bore at the standard's minimum); the closed end wall is as thick as the barrel wall; both collars are 3 mm thick and round (the real barrel collar has two flats, width not published); the plunger rod is as long as the bore, so the collars meet when the plunger bottoms. The metal Luer-lock collar is not drawn (its outside is not defined by ISO 594-2 and not given in the datasheet).
- 3 mL is left out: the series has no 3 mL and I found no other datasheet that gives a 3 mL glass barrel's OD, length and collar. Brands differ: the syringe-pump tables give the Popper (Micro-Mate) glass bores as 1 mL 4.50, 2 mL 8.92, 3 mL 8.99, 5 mL 11.7, 10 mL 14.7, 20 mL 19.6, 30 mL 22.7, 50 mL 29.0 mm (the bores most DIY builds quote); those are listed in the table for reference but not drawn, because no Popper OD, length or collar size is published.
- In the existing frames: the plastic-syringe sockets are Ø15.9 (alpha V-twin frame, V block, Ross frame, LTD top plate, tri-clamp syringe head, syringe-cradle-10ml). A glass 5 mL barrel (Ø15.40) goes in with 0.50 mm diametral play (it does not grip: the socket is 0.25 mm per side oversize); a glass 10 mL (Ø18.35) does not go in. syringe-cradle-20ml (Ø21.0) fits no glass size; syringe-cradle-60ml (Ø29.0) takes a glass 30 mL (Ø27.30) with 1.70 play, not a 50 mL (Ø32.35). The syringe-pistons (Ø14.5 / 19.1 / 21.7) are plastic-barrel bores and fit no glass barrel: a glass syringe runs on its own plunger.
- Stroke volume per mm = bore² × π / 4: 5 mL 0.125 mL/mm, 10 mL 0.180 mL/mm. The 5 mL is the power piston of the mug LTD and the test-tube marble engine; glass-syringe-plunger-clevis takes the con-rod.

Questions
What is the bore of a 10 mL glass syringe?
15.15 mm in the KD Scientific / Tomopal series (barrel OD 18.35, 128.50 long); Popper Micro-Mate glass is quoted at 14.7 mm by syringe-pump tables. Brands differ, so check which one you have.
Does a glass syringe fit a holder made for a plastic 10 mL syringe?
A 5 mL glass barrel (Ø15.40) slides into a Ø15.9 plastic-syringe socket with 0.5 mm play; a 10 mL glass barrel (Ø18.35) does not fit. Use a holder drawn at the glass barrel's own OD.
Why use a glass syringe as a Stirling power piston?
The ground-glass plunger runs in its barrel with almost no friction and no seal ring, which is what a low-temperature or marble engine needs.
Which glass syringe sizes are on this page?
1, 2, 5, 10, 20, 30 and 50 mL, each as a barrel file and a plunger file. 3 mL is not drawn: no datasheet with its outside sizes was found.
