Potentiometer panel-mount bushings and shafts: M7, M8, M9 and 3/8-32 bushings, 6 mm and 1/4 in shafts, knurl and flat (Bourns, Alps, Alpha, CTS)
What thread and shaft does a panel-mount potentiometer have, and what hole does it need? · Standard part · basis: Bourns PTV09, PDB18x and PDA24 data sheets, Alps Alpine RK09 and RK163 sheets, Taiwan Alpha RV24 and RVQ24 sheets and the CTS series 270 data sheet, as read; numbers only
Also called: potentiometer bushing thread, 9mm pot bushing size, 16mm potentiometer thread M7, guitar pot bushing 3/8-32, pot shaft diameter 6mm, 6.35 mm pot shaft, potentiometer panel hole size, alpha 16mm pot dimensions, bourns ptv09 shaft length, pot knurled shaft 18 teeth, potentiometer nut size, cts 270 potentiometer shaft, pot lug anti rotation hole, 24mm pot thread

Notes
- Rows are what each maker prints for the bushing (the threaded neck that goes through the panel), the shaft and the supplied nut and washer. The bushing thread is not the same on every 'size': 9 mm Bourns PTV09A is M9 x 0.75, 16 mm Alps RK163 is M7 x 0.75, 17 mm Bourns PDB18x is 3/8-32 UNEF, and the 24 mm Alpha RV24 is M8 x 0.75 while the Alpha RVQ24 sheet prints M9 x 0.75. Both Alpha figures are shown because the two sheets differ. The body size in the family name (9, 16, 17, 24 mm) is the housing, not the thread.
- Panel hole: almost no maker prints one. The only panel-side numbers found are on the CTS 270X drawing (a 15.9 mm 'bushing clearance hole' and a 2.4 x 1.0 mm locating-lug clearance, two holes), which is a clearance for the control body behind the panel on that drawing, not a threaded-bushing hole. For the bushing hole, drill a hole at the thread's major diameter plus your own clearance: M7 = 7 mm, M8 = 8 mm, M9 = 9 mm, 3/8-32 = 9.525 mm. These are the nominal threads, not a maker's panel hole.
- Anti-rotation: the datasheets read show a locating lug or pin (CTS lug left / right / both / none; Bourns PDA24 'anti-rotation pins') but none gave a position as a labeled number, so the lug hole position is not on this page and no gauge is drawn. Panel thickness is also not printed on any of these sheets; the bushing length (CTS .250 in to 1.000 in in 1/8 in steps) sets what the nut can clamp.
- Shaft: 6.0 mm (Bourns PTV09A, PDB18x, Alps RK09 / RK163, CTS .236 in), 6.35 mm / 1/4 in (PDA24, CTS .250 in, RVQ24 unlabeled). Knurled shafts are 18-tooth (Bourns S, Alps RK163, Alpha RV24, Bourns PDB18x / PDA24 config 00), 24-tooth (PDA24 config 01, CTS T, PDB185) or 40-tooth (Bourns PTV09A 'U', Alps RK09). 'D' or flatted shafts use the CTS X / Y values above; their labels are not defined in the text read.
- Alps RK09K / RK09D is a snap-in part with a 6 mm bushing and no thread in the pages read, so it is not a nut-mount pot. Trimmer pots: trimmer-potentiometers. Rotary encoders and arcade parts: adafruit-buttons-joysticks-encoders. Toggle bushings: toggle-switch-bushings-panel-holes.
- No file: the pot body, the lug and the knurl profile are not published as complete numbers, so a drawing would be invented. Maker 3D models are linked from the maker (Bourns lists a model per part), not copied.
