All-metal prevailing-torque lock nuts: DIN 980 V / M, ISO 7042 M5–M36 and inch Stover-type / top-lock nuts — across flats, height

What are the dimensions of a DIN 980 / ISO 7042 all-metal lock nut or an inch Stover-type (top-lock) nut? · Standard part · basis: fasten.it's DIN 980 table (withdrawn 1987), iTeh's ISO 7042:2012 sample pages (cross-checked against fasten.it's 2013 edition page and Dresselhaus' change list), Aspen Fasteners' Grade C and CDE's Grade 9 inch tables; numbers only

Also called: din 980 dimensions, iso 7042 dimensions, m10 all metal lock nut height, m8 din 980 v, stover lock nut dimensions, top lock nut size chart, all metal lock nut vs nyloc, iso 7042 m12 height, grade c lock nut 3/8 across flats, prevailing torque nut m6 dimensions, din 980 v wrench size, stover nut 1/4-20 height

Notes

  • DIN 980 (all-metal prevailing torque hexagon nuts, in forms V and M) is withdrawn; fasten.it still prints its 05-1987 tables. V and M share the same dimensions, M3 to M39: pitch (coarse, and the fine pitches), s, e min and h min / max (the page's letters; h is the nut height). ISO 7042 (prevailing torque type, all-metal hexagon high nuts, property classes 5, 8, 10 and 12) replaces it for M5 to M36, with the sizes M3, M4, M7, M18, M22, M27, M33 and M39 cancelled, wrench sizes changed for M10, M12 and M14, lower heights and no fine threads (Dresselhaus). Wrench sizes in the withdrawn DIN 980 are 17, 19 and 22 mm for M10, M12 and M14 against 16, 18 and 21 mm in ISO 7042. M14 is in brackets in ISO 7042 ('avoid if possible').
  • ISO 7042:2012 sample pages (iTeh) print for M5 to M36: da min / max, dw min, e min, h max / min, mw min, s max / min and the pitch Pb; the page does not print a separate nut height 'm'. fasten.it's 2013-edition page agrees on s, e and h for every size. In the 2013 / 2012 edition M12's h max is 13.30 mm; the 02-1998 edition on the same site prints 12 mm. The two lists are not interchangeable at M12 height.
  • Inch rows are two distributor sheets with no standard cited: Aspen's Grade C 'Stover-equivalent' all-metal lock nut (conical top, chamfered corners; locking by controlled distortion of the top threads; one-way, top up) with width across flats (nominal, max, min), overall thickness (max, min) and hex height (min), 1/4 to 1; and CDE's Grade 9 top-lock nut, 1/4 to 1-1/2, the same columns without hex height. The Grade 9 sheet lists a much taller nut than the Grade C one at the same size (for example 1/4: 0.288 against 0.226 in). The sheets' hardness, proof load and temperature statements are not reproduced here.
  • No file: the locking feature (distorted top or clamped element) and top chamfer profile are not published as numbers in any source read; an envelope hex would not be the part. Nylon-insert nuts are separate pages: nylon-insert-lock-nuts-iso-7040-din-985, nylon-insert-lock-nuts-inch-asme-b18-16-6. McMaster-Carr sells all-metal locknuts with per-part STEP; its Grade 5 and Grade 9 locknut categories are linked, not copied.

Questions

What is the height of an M8 ISO 7042 all-metal lock nut?

8.00 mm max and 7.14 mm min (h), 13 mm across flats, per the ISO 7042:2012 sample pages and fasten.it.

What is the difference between DIN 980 and ISO 7042?

ISO 7042 replaces DIN 980 for M5 to M36: eight sizes cancelled (M3, M4, M7, M18, M22, M27, M33, M39), wrench sizes changed for M10 to M14, lower heights, no fine threads.

How tall is a 1/4-20 Stover-type lock nut?

0.212 to 0.226 in overall for Aspen's Grade C nut (7/16 in across flats); CDE's Grade 9 top-lock nut is 0.274 to 0.288 in.
