Taper pins: ISO 2339 / DIN 1 (1:50) and ANSI / ASME No. 7/0 to No. 14 (1/4 in per foot): diameters, taper, lengths + example taper pin models

What are the small and large end diameters of an ISO 2339 taper pin or an ANSI No. 5 taper pin, and what taper? · Standard part · basis: fasten.it's ISO 2339 table and iTeh's ISO 2339:1986 sample pages (taper, length list), Lawson Products' listings for the 1:50 and 1/4 in per foot tapers, McMaster-Carr's taper-pin tables for the inch No. 7/0 to 14 (which McMaster files under ASME B18.8.2) and a metric cross-check; 24 example pins as files

Also called: iso 2339 taper pin dimensions, din 1 taper pin, taper pin 1:50, taper pin size chart no 5, taper pin number 7 large end diameter, taper pin 1/4 inch per foot, no 10 taper pin diameter, taper pin small end diameter formula, ansi taper pin numbers, taper pin number 3 diameter .219, metric taper pin 6x40, taper pin h10 tolerance

Exact dimensions. Every file is drawn at true size with no tolerance added. The holes and pins that meet another part are listed below under Mating features, with the fit each joint needs; open those by your process's clearance before making the part. Mating features

Notes

  • ISO 2339 (DIN 1) taper pins, unhardened, 0.6 to 50 mm: the nominal d is the small end diameter (d max = nominal, d min per the table; the h10 class column is in iTeh's sample page) and the taper is 1:50, i.e. 1 mm on diameter for every 50 mm of length (Lawson's M3 x 50 mm listing: 4 mm large end; McMaster's metric table: 4 mm small end, 20 to 60 mm long, 4.4 to 5.2 mm large end). a approx. is the table's value (the sources read do not define it). Type A pins are ground (Ra 0.8 µm), type B turned (Ra 3.2 µm), designation example 'Taper pin ISO 2339 - A - 6 x 30 - St' (iTeh OCR). Nominal lengths are the same list as the parallel pins: 2 to 100 in steps (2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18, 20, 22, 24, 26, 28, 30, 32, 35, 40, 45, 50, 55 ... 100), then 120 to 200 (iTeh). The large end of any ISO pin is d + l / 50, computed on the models; it is not a table column.
  • Inch rows: pin No. 7/0 to No. 14 with the large end diameter and length range McMaster prints, and the small end range it prints for those lengths; the pin number is the standard's size designation (the large end for No. 5, for example, is 0.289 in, for No. 9 it is 0.591 in, Lawson's ANSI B18.8.2 listing agrees on No. 9: taper 1/4 in per foot, large end 0.591 in). McMaster describes inch pins as 1:48 (about 1/4 in per foot). Small end = large end − length / 48 reproduces McMaster's small-end ranges at both ends of the length range for No. 7/0 (0.063 − 0.75 / 48 = 0.0474; printed 0.047) and No. 5 (0.289 − 1.5 / 48 = 0.2578; printed 0.258). The B18.8.2 standard itself was not read; the dimensions are McMaster's tables, labelled as such.
  • McMaster also lists tapped and threaded taper pins (internal thread for pulling, or an external thread for a nut), the threaded types at metric sizes 5 to 30 mm small end and inch No. 1 to 14; those are not tabulated here.
  • Hole: a taper pin goes in a hole reamed to the same taper (1:50 or 1/4 in per foot); the taper reamer's own geometry is not in the sources read. Pin ends: the metric table prints a approx., but the sources read do not say what it measures; no end form is modelled.
  • Files: true-size cones, small end at z = 0. Metric: small end Ø3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 10, 12 mm at the example lengths 30, 30, 40, 40, 50, 60, 60 mm (all inside McMaster's listed ranges). Inch: No. 7/0 to 2/0 at 0.75 in and No. 0 to 10 at 2 in (all inside McMaster's listed length ranges). Lengths are Xem's choices. No chamfer or crown on the ends. McMaster-Carr sells taper pins with per-part STEP; its category is linked, not copied.

Questions

What taper does a metric taper pin have?

1:50: 1 mm on the diameter every 50 mm of length (ISO 2339; Lawson's M3 x 50 listing and McMaster's metric table agree). The nominal d is the small end.

What diameter is a No. 5 taper pin?

0.289 in at the large end, 1/4 in per foot taper (McMaster's inch table; the small end of a 1-1/2 in pin is about 0.258 in).

How do I find the small end of an inch taper pin?

Subtract length / 48 from the large end (1/4 in per foot is 1:48): No. 5 at 2 in is 0.289 − 2 / 48 = 0.247 in (computed).
