Hex weld nuts, DIN 929: M3–M16 pilot diameter, height, across flats, sheet thickness range

What are the dimensions of a DIN 929 hexagon weld nut, and what hole does an M8 weld nut need? · Standard part · basis: fasten.it's DIN 929 table (12/2013), cross-checked on m, s, e and the pilot diameter against GlobalFastener's DIN 929 table; numbers only

Notes

  • Columns (mm) as fasten.it prints them: d thread, P pitch, d2 (tolerance d11, the projection / pilot diameter), m height (h14), s width across flats (h13), e across corners (min), d3 (H13, equal to d2 in every row, shown once), a sheet thickness range as a minimum to maximum. GlobalFastener's DIN 929 table agrees with fasten.it on m, s, e and d2 for every size M3 to M16 (e.g. M8: m 6.5, s 14, e 15.38, d2 10.5; M10: 8, 17, 18.74, 12.5). Its flattened layout was read with inferred column alignment, so only these four quantities were compared.
  • d2 is read as the diameter of the centring projection and d3 (equal to d2 in every row, with an H13 tolerance class) as the matching sheet-hole diameter; the page does not say so, so check a maker drawing. The projection heights (GlobalFastener h1 0.55 to 1.8, h2 0.25 to 1.0 max) and the weld projection geometry are not described well enough to draw. The standard covers coarse thread M3 to M16 and fine thread 8 to 16 mm, product grade A (fasten.it); GlobalFastener also lists a 7/16-20 UNF size, not tabulated here. Sizes in brackets, such as M14, are non-preferred (GlobalFastener).
  • No file: the weld projections and the underside shape are not published as numbers in the sources read. Rivet nuts (blind threaded inserts, no welding): rivet-nuts-flat-head. McMaster-Carr sells projection weld nuts with per-part STEP; the category is linked, not copied.

Questions

What hole size for an M8 DIN 929 weld nut?

d2 (read as the pilot) is 10.5 mm (d11); the nut is 6.5 mm high, 14 mm across flats, for sheet 1 to 3 mm (fasten.it).

What is the wrench size of an M10 weld nut?

s = 17 mm (e min 18.74), m = 8 mm.
