Wing nuts: DIN 315 M4–M24 and ASME B18.17 #4 to 3/4 — boss, wing spread, height, wing thickness
What are the dimensions of a DIN 315 wing nut, and how wide is a 1/4-20 wing nut? · Standard part · basis: fasten.it DIN 315 table (cross-checked against HB Bolt's metric cut sheet), a cold-forged wing nut sheet citing ASME B18.17, and McMaster-Carr's wing-nut tables as printed; numbers only
Also called: wing nut dimensions, din 315 wing nut, m6 wing nut dimensions, m8 wing nut wing span, 1/4-20 wing nut dimensions, wing nut size chart, din 315 m10 height, b18.17 wing nut, wing nut wing spread, butterfly nut dimensions, 5/16-18 wing nut width, wing nut boss diameter
Exact dimensions. True size, with no tolerance added.

Notes
- DIN 315 rows are the fasten.it table for round-wing wing nuts, product class C, M4 to M24, in mm: boss diameter D1, wing span e, overall height h, wing thickness g, and the dimension m, each max / min. The page does not define the letters beyond their position in the table, so the column names here follow the table, not an interpretation. HB Bolt's cut sheet (boss diameter, wing spread, wing height, max) agrees with fasten.it for M4, M5, M6, M8, M10, M16 and M20 (8 / 20 / 10.5, 11 / 26 / 13, 13 / 33 / 17, 16 / 39 / 20, 20 / 51 / 25, 29 / 73 / 37.5, 35 / 90 / 46.5). For M12 HB Bolt prints a wing height max of 33.5 mm and fasten.it 35.5 mm, so both are noted and the fasten.it figure (h min 31) is the one shown. HB Bolt also prints an M14 row identical to its M16 row; M14 is not in the fasten.it table and is left out.
- ASME B18.17 rows are a cold-forged wing nut table (inches, max / min) with the sheet's own letters: A wing spread, B wing height, C wing thickness, D opening between wings, E boss diameter, G boss height. The sheet lists two thread series per size (coarse and fine, shown as TPI). The text read does not say 'Type A' or 'Type B', and no Type B (hot-forged) table was found, so Type A / Type B are not labelled and Type B is not on this page.
- McMaster-Carr rows are what McMaster prints on its wing-nut category page: 'Wd.' as wing spread, 'Ht.' as height and 'Base Dia.' as boss diameter, steel styles 4, 5 and iron styles 5, 8. They are not B18.17 limits: for example a 1/4-20 style 4 is 1-1/8 in wide against a B18.17 wing spread of 0.97–1.10 in, so McMaster's styles are other wing forms; use McMaster's drawing for its own parts.
- DIN 315 is a wing nut with round wings; edged wings are DIN 314 and are not on this page. Material, plating and thread class are not given in the tables used.
- No file: the wing outline is not published as numbers in any source read (only span, height, thickness and boss), so a drawing would be invented. McMaster-Carr sells wing nuts with per-part STEP; linked, not copied.

Questions
How wide is an M8 DIN 315 wing nut?
Wing span e is 39 mm max and 36 mm min, boss diameter D1 16 mm max and 13 mm min, height h 20 mm max and 18 mm min (fasten.it; HB Bolt agrees on the maxima).
How wide is a 1/4-20 wing nut?
In the cold-forged ASME B18.17 table read here: wing spread 1.10 in max / 0.97 in min, wing height 0.57 / 0.43 in, boss diameter 0.50 / 0.45 in. McMaster's style 4 is listed at 1-1/8 in wide, a different form.
What is the difference between DIN 315 and DIN 314?
DIN 315 is rounded wings (German form); DIN 314 is edged wings. Only DIN 315 is tabulated on this page.
