Wire-end ferrules, DIN 46228 (end sleeves): length, collar diameter and colour code, 0.5 to 50 mm², French and German colours
What are the dimensions and colour codes of DIN 46228 wire-end ferrules (bootlace ferrules) by wire cross-section, and how do the French and German colours differ? · Standard part · basis: GAM catalogue table (one length per size), checked against Weidmüller H10,0/22D, Otto Fischer and Klauke data sheets; colour codes from stex24, cross-checked with Phoenix Contact; no CAD files
Also called: wire ferrule sizes, ferrule size chart, din 46228 ferrule, bootlace ferrule dimensions, aderendhülse maße, ferrule color code, ferrule colour code din, french ferrule colours, german ferrule colours, 0.75 mm2 ferrule, 1.5 mm2 ferrule length, 2.5 mm2 ferrule 8 mm, 10 mm2 ferrule 12 mm, twin ferrule 2x1.5, cord end terminal, embout de câblage couleurs

Notes
- Wire-end ferrules (end sleeves, bootlace ferrules, Aderendhülsen) are crimped on the stripped end of a stranded wire so a screw or spring clamp does not splay the strands. DIN 46228 part 1 is the plain (uninsulated) sleeve, part 4 the sleeve with a plastic collar. The table is one maker's catalogue (GAM, 'insulated to DIN 46228 part 4, except #' rows): one length per cross-section plus the twin (two-wire) sleeves. Lengths come in several steps per size, so L1 / L2 / D1 / D2 change with the length you pick.
- Column meanings as Weidmüller labels them on its H10,0/22D sheet: L1 overall length, L2 length of the metal sleeve, D1 'contact surface diameter', D2 collar diameter, S1 metal wall, S2 plastic collar wall. The Weidmüller 10 mm² sleeve (L1 22, L2 12, D1 4.5, D2 7.6, S1 0.2, S2 0.4) matches the GAM row exactly. Otto Fischer's 1 mm² DIN 46228-4 sleeve is the same type in a longer step: l1 18, l2 12, d1 1.4, d2 3, s1 0.15, s2 0.25 (the GAM row is the 14 / 8 step: D1 1.4 agrees, D2 is 3.4 vs 3.0). Klauke's 0.75 mm² grey sleeve: L 16, pin length 10 (DIN 46228/4). Neither sheet says whether D1 is a bore or an outside diameter, so no solid is drawn.
- Colour codes by cross-section: the DIN 46228-4 / German / French columns come from stex24's table and agree with Phoenix Contact's colour table (DIN 46228-4, UL 486-F, NF C 63-023 and a special German code) for every size from 0.5 to 50 mm². Colour alone does not identify the size (DIN grey is both 0.75 and 4 mm²; red is 1, 10 and 35 mm²). Outside the standard: 0.14 mm² grey, 0.25 light blue, 0.34 turquoise (DIN-style practice); 70 mm² yellow, 95 mm² red, 120 mm² blue (DIN 46628 as stex24 lists it).
- Uninsulated DIN 46228-1 sleeves (GLW catalogue): 1.5 and 2.5 mm² in lengths l = 7, 8, 10, 12, 15*, 18, 20* mm (* not to the standard), d1 1.7 and 2.2 mm, wall s 0.15 mm; the d1 and s values match the insulated rows. The GLW copy's d2 column did not align cleanly, so it is not used.
- Rows marked # (FTR1-8#, FTR1.5-8#): the maker's footnote says the insulated ones are DIN 46228-4 'except #'; the page does not say what differs. AWG pairings are the maker's (a 1 mm² sleeve is listed against 18 AWG).
- Left out: files (the sleeve bore / outside-diameter ambiguity above), crimp-die codes, other makers' length steps. The maker pages are linked below for CAD and full tables.
