Notes

  • American Standard aluminum channel (ASTM B308 / B221 6061-T6) has sloped inner flange faces, unlike the Aluminum Association channel on aluminum-channels: the flange is thinner at the tip than at the root. The designation is depth x pounds per foot (4 x 2.16 is a 4 in deep channel of 2.16 lb/ft). The 18 sizes 2 x 1.22 to 7 x 5.96 are the Engineers Edge table of the Aluminum Association Standard Structural Profiles (2020).
  • The Engineers Edge page's column headings (flange thickness, average web thickness, fillet radius, tip radius) do not match its values. Xem mapped the four values by comparing with Online Metals' product pages for 4 x 1.647 x 0.247, 5 x 1.885 x 0.325, 6 x 2.157 x 0.437 and 8 x 2.527 x 0.487 (web, leg thickness, inside radius) and Metals Depot's web thicknesses: first value = flange tip thickness (4 in: 0.180 = Online Metals' 0.18 leg thickness), second = average flange thickness, third = web thickness (varies by size; equals Metals Depot's web on all 14 sizes it lists), fourth = inside corner radius (Online Metals 0.28 / 0.29 / 0.30). Check: with a 1 : 6 (16.67 %) inner-face slope, (tip + root) / 2 equals the printed average thickness within 0.003 in on all 18 sizes, and the drawn area is within 3 % of the printed area and of the designation weight on all 18.
  • Flange root thickness is derived from that slope (tip + (B − web) / 6) and is not itself printed. The 1 : 6 slope is not stated on the Engineers Edge or Online Metals pages; it is the value that makes the printed averages consistent.
  • Online Metals also prints a 'leg radius' (0.11, 0.11, 0.12, 0.13 in for 4, 5, 6, 8 in) and calls 'tapered walls' out; it does not say which corners the leg radius belongs to, and Engineers Edge has no such column, so the flange tips and the outside corners are drawn square. Weights differ between distributors for the same size (Metals Depot 3.12 / Online Metals 3.18 lb/ft for 5 x 1.885; 6.48 / 6.63 for 8 x 2.527); both are shown.
  • Files are 4 in (101.6 mm) long along X, web back at y = 0, flanges toward +y, depth along z. The 4 in length is Xem's choice. Sizes 8 x ... to 12 x ... are listed by Metals Depot (width, web, weight) without the other dimensions, so they are numbers only; the 8 in sizes carry Online Metals' printed web, leg thickness and radii.

Questions

What is the difference between American Standard and Aluminum Association aluminum channel?

American Standard channel has an inner flange face sloped 1 : 6 (thinner at the tip); Aluminum Association channel has parallel, constant-thickness flanges (aluminum-channels).

What does 4 x 2.16 mean for aluminum channel?

A 4 in deep American Standard channel weighing 2.16 lb per foot; width 1.647 in, web 0.247 in, flange tip 0.18 in, inside radius 0.28 in.

How thick is the web of a 3 x 1.42 aluminum channel?

0.170 in (Engineers Edge; Metals Depot lists the same size as 3 x 1.41 x 0.170 at 1.42 lb/ft).
