R-clips, spring cotters and hairpin cotter pins: wire diameter, pin / shaft range, length (DIN 11024, McMaster hairpin sizes)

What size R-clip (hairpin cotter) fits a given clevis pin or shaft, and what is its wire diameter and length? · Standard part · basis: fasten.it's DIN 11024 table (7 sizes, wire 2.5 to 8 mm) checked against Aspen Fasteners' spec sheet (d1, d2, d3, d4, l agree), fasten.it's second 'commonly used' table, and McMaster-Carr's hairpin cotter pin and hairpin clip tables (zinc-plated spring steel, inch and metric); numbers only

Also called: r clip sizes, hairpin cotter pin sizes, din 11024 spring cotter, r clip for 1/2 inch pin, hairpin cotter pin wire diameter, r clip 10 mm pin, r clip size chart, hairpin clip shaft diameter, din 11024 dimensions, r clip for 5/8 clevis pin, spring cotter 3.2 mm, hairpin cotter length

Exact dimensions. Every file is drawn at true size with no tolerance added. The holes and pins that meet another part are listed below under Mating features, with the fit each joint needs; open those by your process's clearance before making the part. Mating features

Notes

  • An R-clip (hairpin cotter pin, spring cotter) is a wire clip that passes through the cross hole of a clevis pin and closes round the outside of the pin; the wire diameter and the pin range it serves are the sizes that matter. DIN 11024 (fasten.it: 'cotter pins, Beta type', 01/1973; the example designation is 'Cotter spring 5 DIN 11024') lists d1 (wire, 2.5 to 8 mm), d2 (the pin / bolt diameter range, over 9 up to 56 mm), d3, d4, l1, l2, l3, h, r1 and r2; the sources do not define the letters beyond d1 as the nominal size and d2 as the range, so d3, d4, l and the rest are shown as printed (Aspen's sheet prints d1, d2, d3, d4 and l and they agree).
  • fasten.it also prints a second table of single-coil spring cotters 'commonly used in the market', not part of DIN 11024: wire 2.5 to 9 mm, pin range, d3, d4, l1, l2; it is shown as its own rows.
  • McMaster-Carr rows are what McMaster prints under 'For Clevis Pin Dia.', 'Wire Dia.', 'Eye Dia.' and 'Lg.' for zinc-plated spring steel hairpin cotter pins, all rows (inch, then metric, which McMaster lists as DIN 11024 for 9 to 14 mm and 2 mm wire, 57 mm long). McMaster's 18-8 and 316 stainless, 17-7 PH, long-life, cross-leg and mil-spec tables use the same pin ranges with some different wire sizes and lengths; they are not repeated. The hairpin clips table is McMaster's 'shaft dia., wire dia., length, pin opening'. Eye diameter and the lengths differ between the DIN 11024 sizes and McMaster's: for example McMaster's 3 mm wire for 10 to 16 mm pins (72 mm long) is a different wire size from DIN 11024's 3.2 mm for pins over 11.2 to 14 mm (48 mm long), so match the pin range, not the wire.
  • Not published as numbers in the sources read: the clip's outline (the bend radii are r1, r2 in the DIN table but the layout is not described). No file is drawn for that reason. Split pins for a cross hole: split-pins-iso-1234; clevis pins: clevis-pins-iso-2341. McMaster-Carr sells R-clips with per-part STEP; its R-clip category is linked, not copied.
  • The existing page pins-clevises-and-joints lists R-clips drawn at the split-pin wire sizes (0.8 to 2 mm) for 3 to 8 mm model pins; these are the full-size DIN and catalogue sizes.

Questions

What R-clip fits a 1/2 in clevis pin?

McMaster's zinc-plated hairpin cotters list several for 1/2 in: 1/4 to 1/2 in pins with 1/16 or 3/32 in wire (1-5/16 or 1-5/8 in long), 3/8 to 1/2 in with 1/16 or 5/64 in wire, 1/2 to 5/8 in with 1/8 in wire (2-3/8 in), 1/2 to 3/4 in with 3/32 or 1/8 in wire.

What is the DIN 11024 size for a 12 mm pin?

d2 'over 11.2 to 14' mm is the 3.2 mm wire size (l 48 mm); a 10 mm pin falls in the 2.5 mm size (d2 9 to 11.2 mm, l 42 mm).

Is an R-clip the same as a split pin?

No: a split pin (ISO 1234) goes through a cross hole and its legs are bent over; an R-clip passes through the hole and its bow springs round the outside of the pin.
