- Rotor Clip's SH is the axially assembled external (shaft) ring and HO the internal (housing) ring in its inch series; the number after the dash is the shaft or housing diameter in hundredths of an inch for most sizes (SH-75 = 0.750 in, HO-193 = 1.938 in) but not all: SH-31 is 0.312 in, HO-68 is 0.688 in, SH-354 3.543 in (90 mm) and HO-206 2.047 in (52 mm). The diameter shown is the one on Rotor Clip's page.
- Groove diameter and width are the ranges Rotor Clip prints (low – high). Groove depth is the page's value (within 0.001 in of half the difference between the shaft or housing diameter and the middle of the groove range for all 30 rings listed, for example SH-75 (0.750 − 0.704) / 2 = 0.023). Ring thickness is the range printed for the ring (add 0.002 in to the maximum for plated rings, per the pages).
- Rotor Clip's catalog states these are its standard commercial production dimensions and that military, ASME, NAS and ANSI rings (for example MS16624) may differ: MS16624-2066, read on a distributor spec, prints a groove diameter of 0.629 ±0.003 and groove width 0.039 +0.003 / −0.000, which is its own size and is not a Rotor Clip SH ring; do not mix the two.
- Not here: free diameter, lug height, section, hole size, clearance diameters, thrust and speed limits are on Rotor Clip's pages and are left out on purpose; the ring profile is not published as numbers in a form that gives a true-size model, so there are no files. The metric/DIN equivalents are on retaining-rings-din-471-external and retaining-rings-din-472-internal.
- A distributor's generic 'retaining ring groove chart' (Albany County Fasteners) lists other groove widths (for example 0.062 in for a 1 in shaft against Rotor Clip's 0.046 – 0.049) and is not used. Sizes between the rows are in Rotor Clip's catalog, linked below as product pages.
