PVC rigid conduit Schedule 40 and Schedule 80 (NEMA TC 2 / UL 651): trade size, OD, minimum wall, minimum average ID, 1/2 to 8 in + 100 mm sections
What are the OD and minimum wall of Schedule 40 and Schedule 80 PVC conduit (1/2 to 6 in)? · Standard part · basis: Wheatland Tube's PVC conduit spec sheet (Sch 40 and 80, 1/2 to 4 in) and Atkore's Sch 40 spec (1/2 to 8 in) agree on OD, minimum wall and minimum average ID; walls for 6 and 8 in Sch 80 are from a PVC conduit manufacturer's page
Also called: schedule 40 pvc conduit od, 1 inch pvc conduit outside diameter, 2 inch pvc conduit od, schedule 80 pvc conduit wall, pvc conduit 3 inch od, pvc conduit trade size chart, 1/2 pvc conduit od, 4 inch pvc conduit od wall, nema tc 2 conduit dimensions, sch 80 pvc conduit 1 inch wall, pvc conduit id sch 40 2 inch, pvc conduit 6 inch od, ul 651 conduit sizes

Notes
- PVC rigid conduit is made to the same trade sizes and outside diameters as PVC and steel pipe, so a Schedule 40 or 80 PVC conduit has the OD of the matching NPS pipe (1/2 in 0.840, 3/4 in 1.050, 1 in 1.315, 1-1/4 in 1.660, 1-1/2 in 1.900, 2 in 2.375, 2-1/2 in 2.875, 3 in 3.500, 3-1/2 in 4.000, 4 in 4.500, 5 in 5.563, 6 in 6.625, 8 in 8.625). Wheatland's sheet cites UL 651 and lists NEMA TC 2 and ASTM 1784 among its standards; Atkore's names UL 651, which does not include the 8 in size (as Atkore says). The standards themselves were not read; the numbers are the two makers' sheets.
- Walls are minimum walls and the IDs are minimum average IDs, not nominal: ID = OD − 2 × minimum wall (shown separately, the last numeric column) is larger than the printed minimum average ID (for example 1/2 in Sch 40: 0.622 against 0.578 in), because the OD and wall tolerances are applied. Wheatland and Atkore print identical Schedule 40 numbers for 1/2 to 4 in; Atkore adds 5 in (OD 5.563, wall 0.258, ID 4.975), 6 in (6.625, 0.280, 5.986) and 8 in (8.625, 0.322, 7.853).
- Schedule 80 (heavier wall, same OD): Wheatland prints 1/2 to 4 in; its minimum average ID for 3-1/2 in (3.820) is larger than the one for 4 in (3.737) and than OD − 2 × wall (3.364), so it is almost certainly a typo and is left blank here. 6 and 8 in Sch 80 walls (0.432, 0.500) are from a PVC conduit manufacturer's page, a second source for the other Sch 80 walls (equal at every size that page lists: 1/2, 3/4, 1, 1-1/4, 1-1/2, 2, 3 and 4 in); that page's ID columns (for example 0.824 in for 3/4 in Sch 40, against Wheatland and Atkore's 0.780) are different quantities and are not used. No Sch 80 data for 5 in was read.
- Not covered: Type EB and DB (encased burial / direct burial) conduit, fittings (sockets, elbows), and the PVC pipe tables, which are on pvc-schedule-40-80-pipe-od-and-wall and schedule-40-pipe (1/2 to 2 in Sch 40 pipe sections). Steel conduit: rigid-imc-emt-conduit-sizes-to-4-in and emt-conduit; flexible and liquid-tight metal conduit: flexible-metal-conduit-fmc-lfmc-trade-sizes.
- Files: 100 mm hollow sections at the average OD and the minimum wall: Schedule 40 for 2-1/2, 3, 3-1/2, 4, 5 and 6 in (1/2 to 2 in Schedule 40 is on schedule-40-pipe) and Schedule 80 for 1/2 to 4 in. The length is Xem's example length; actual conduit ID varies with the tolerances above.
